Pruning Conifers - when should we do it?

When is the best time of year to prune conifers - our hedge is getting a bit high and could do with a trim up top but not sure when we should do it.

I have the same problem as you - really want to cut 'em down totally, but they are good for privacy. They grow so fast! I think the best time to trim is when they are growing so that you don't get those ugly brown patches.
