Hi all

I just had a letter saying I went through a red on Prince of Wales Road. I have no recollection of doing this, so I am assuming it must have been either my back wheels as it changed from red to amber, or possibly my front wheels being a bit over the line when it went red, or maybe being a little eager on the red/amber stage and revving a little ahead of the line. I have no idea if I did these things, but they seem the most likely reasons.

If I'm guilty of the offence I have no problem with the penalty, but I'd like to know what I'm being accused of doing, partly to make sure I AM in the wrong, and also as much for my own education as anything!

I've been on the pepipoo site but found it really confusing. Lots of people have said they've got photos, and my letter says I have to ask for these in writing, but what do I put in the letter? Do I do that before sending back the pink form?

Also: do you declare points to your insurance company as soon as they're issued or just when renewal comes up? How much would three points for running a red be likely to push the insurance premium up by?

Hi, you need to join Pepipoo and complete their NIP wizard. They will then advise you. All you'll get on here is people telling you you shouldn't have done it.

It won't have got you on amber, I believe the cameras don't 'arm' until after the light has gone red

Quite-but I am generally very well behaved when driving so that's what's baffled me. They can catch you on amber if the light changes to red when a bit of your car hasn't passed the line. I don't know if this is what happened.

The camera is triggered when your wheels run over a strip in front of the white line (you'll see the 'scar' in the tarmac at a camera site). IIRC, it arms 2seconds after the light goes red, to give you time to cross if it was indeed amber.

Oh and I missed your comment about insurance. You need only declare the points at renewal (unless they ask you of course) and generally it does hike the premium up a bit. Do a sample quote on your insurers website with and without the endorsement.

And I know i've already said it but Pepipoo is a very valauble resource!

Evenin all... The scars in the tarmac are induction (magnetic) loops that tell the lights when to change as and when traffic is not over the loop they will send a signal to the programme unit (box) at the base of the light heads telling them to go red and let the other traffic that is parked up over the loops in the opposite direction continue on turning them green and vice versa but there are also gatso cameras that do not work on the loops but are built into the system and constantly monitor the flow of traffic using radar or lazer and it is they that change the lights, in so, doing away with the loops in the road. Hope thats clear :hihi:

Oh, as mud :hihi:

I really just want to see the photos but don't know what to put in my letter to see them, because I'm a bit baffled by it (and also a bit worried I may have done something and not been paying attention properly).

You think we've got it hard, Google "westminister council camera cars", and see wot them poor saps are going through. Keep your eyes peeled, coming soon to a council near you.
