Do I need a certificate for electrical work?

that is most people do ... you just need to find someone to certify it..

i personally would not certify someones work but many do.

if an electrician has the skill to do his job he should keep up to standard with the relevant qualifications to complete his/her job.

You are not allowed to certify work you have not done under the Part P scheme, only exception is if you work for a company and they have a certified supervisor that signs off the work.

Apart from a Building Inspector, nobody can certify someone else's work as being compliant with the Building Regulations. Unless arranged by or in cooperation with LABC, a 3rd party electrical inspection is of no value in terms of complying with the law.

how can a person be deemed competant with out training in the field they have no training in, i agree you could probably wire a circuit better than a lot of the 6 week wonders around at the min but at least they have the basics and can with experience improve on that skill but most importantly they have the knowledge to test the circuit they have just fitted and walk away with the knowledge it is safe to do so.

i agree it is a can of worms...i would rather not have legislation either..

it cost me 2.5 k last year to comply.

and again this year with the 17th edition a further 600 pound,

plus the niciec registration 415 pound.. then books 150..

plus a day off for work checking... loss of wages ..

how can anyone wire a house and be confident that all circuits conform including continuity/earth fault/polarity etc etc with out the latest training and equipment. ?

the tester alone cost over 700 pound...:(

so yes i do agree it would be nice to just buy a screw driver and wire a house.

Well said John.

And don't forget the re-calibration every year, £120.00 for my Fluke Tester.:help::D

Eh, tha, wot tha seyin am fick. :hihi:

So the insuarnce companies will pay out after you've burnt down your house because you are intelligent, think you are competent but not complying with the current regs. :suspect::hihi:

Extreme scenario I know but relevant.

Have fun on the 17th Edition Update course this week John.

I'm re-arranging mine after I've sorted out what we talked about.

It's not an argument, it's a discussion. In fairness to Googleberry, he is really right. The BSI etc did mess things up when they put Part P forward. It would have been much better if people who met a predetermined criteria could have continued with install. However, they didn't so we'll have to live with it until things settle down or are amended.

Sorry if it did seem like an argument. I was in a foul mood after a horrendous showing on the 5-a-side pitch tonight. :)

I remeber reading a report that the amount of deaths actually went up by 800% after Part P was initiated (not too drastic though - eight people died instead of one). Those figures might be slightly off though, this was well before I took a career break in October, don't know what the latest figures are.

This was because guys like yourselves put their costs up to cover the new legislation. People who would have trusted electricans before, now either didn't or couldn't afford to use them. Did the wiring themselves (badly) and paid for it very dearly.
