The Day the Earth Stood Still

This film is let down by it's writing, you can't help but be dissapointed at some of the drab dialogue that's so contrived that even Jennifer Connelly to carry it it off.

What's stunning is just how ensemble the cast is, John Cleese's character was ridiculously underused. Kathy Bates presence is barely noticeable, her character has great scope to develop and change her aggressive ways as a metaphor for the need to change the aggression of the human race. Unfortunately this doesn't happen.

A major plus with this film is the special effects, they shimmer with flair and originality. Even at moments that you could see it going horribly wrong the effect specialist never flinch. Creating a realistic environment and a one that one several occasions may just leave you startled at how astounding the effects are.

None of this excuses the lazy execution of what is still considered a Sci-Fi classic. Watching this film reminds me that stunning source material doesn't ensure a good update of the movie. This is the exact reason why I still have my doubts about "The Watchmen".

Verdict: I enjoyed the first half, and felt disappointed by the second. I doesn't matter how competently the special effects are used, the movie is let down by a lazy second and third part to the film The acting is perfectly passable and the story still hasn't lost its charm but everything else feels very contrived.

It doesn't succeed at being an eye candy, alien invasion movie like Independence Day or War of the worlds. As there is not enough use of the special effects in big action set pieces. It also fails as a thought provoking character driven alien invasion movie like Signs, due to it poor or lazy writing and lack of character development.

Lakeview Terrace - 7/10 - Quite an average film, but with Samuel L Jackson terrorising his neighbours :) Quite liked it, especially the racism against whites.

Pretty much agree there, although I give it 6/10. Very formulaic, and average film, but Jackson is great in it throughout.

Watched Star Wars: Clone Wars on DVD yesterday, still 9/10 but loses some of its impact on the small screen IMO.

Watched Changeling tonight....I have to say I really wasnt impressed...I actually found it quite boring and didnt make it to the end of the film...Also there were quite a few mistakes in the film...using things/props that were not around the era the film was set..

Also I dont understand why it was called "changeling"..

Gutted - thought I would really enjoy this...Malkovich is fantastic though!!
