Don't know about the tightest shop in town, but the OP sound like the tightest shopper. :)

hey i think i might be:hihi: i'd give anyone the snot off the end of my nose if they wanted it(not that they would like )and i dont mind giving to charities like i stated earlier in the thread..and on a regular basis i give to charity!!!! but solely for profit and nothing to do with saving the enviroment then i would rather give my 5p to someone or something more needy.. nothing wrong in that?

I don't mind paying for carrier bags as long as they are plain. They're not charging me to advertise their shop.

Actually M&S are donating all the money from the bags to charity. I suspect most the large chains will do the same.

As for people moaning about having to pay for a bag, shame on you. Its not hard to remember to take a bag with you its like remembering to take your car keys if you want to drive your car. Stop being so lazy and narrow minded. Buy a bag for life and engage your brains cells to such a level that you remember to take it with you before you go. I'd be quite happy to see supermarkets charge £1 a bag if thats what it took to reduce the number of bags used. Ireland have set a good example banning carrier bags in some areas and only using papers bags which are charged for.

Get back to China :gag:

How many people though honestly go to the supermarket and before they set think "Oh got to take my own bags" you don't do you, you just pick up more when you get there and then most likely bin them when you get home or use them as a bin!

I take my small rucksack and if I know I'm going to be doing a big shop I'll take some plastic ones as well.

It helps that I usually need to drop a weeks worth of empty bottles of at the same time though :)

Remember it's not only about the fact that some of us in the country don't want the streets to look like a rubbish dump but the carbon emissions that are produced just by making the plastic is high too. So if the whole cycle is stopped then indeed it will have a high impact on the environment especially as it's not hard to engage your brain and re-use a bag!

The Biodegradable bags apparently aren't actually 100% degradable, all they do is break down into tiny bits but the plastic never actually goes, it's just not as easy to see anymore. Where as paper and other natural fibres are fully broken down thanks to bacteria and other organisms.

Nowt to be ashamed of - a well know Yorkshire trait and probably genetic ;)

For a good while now my wife has been using those fold-up tote bags that fasten with a press-stud for supermarlet shopping. We still manageto collect a few carrier bags though as some shops seem to insist on using them.

For the bits and pieces I buy in town on Saturday I use an old Netto carrier with handles on I've had for probably four years. I really love producing this out of my pocket at the till in the M&S food hall :D

My boyfriend does the shopping every saturday morning, because he says he get round quicker and dosent spend as much if I go with him.

Point is, we buy the reusable ones from morrisons and use them unitl they cant be used anymore. I always think twice about having a carrier bag and if I do i take my lunch to work in them, and use them till they get in a bit of a state. I am then going to take them to the recycle bins which are at morrisons and sainsburys.

So everyone there is no excuse to not recycle your carrier bags and save the enviornment.

Don't worry about it. The pollution saved by the entire country reusing carrier bags for a year is soon cancelled out in about 20 minutes by what China and India are churning out.....
