It was on the news the other day that M&S are going to charge too. It's all to do with the environment. Tesco made theirs thinner, which totally rides over the point as you need twice as many then to carry your shopping!

I could be wrong, but didn't M&S use to charge for bags years ago ? I mean just bags for groceries, not buying clothes, I'm sure some of the oldies will remember .

How many people though honestly go to the supermarket and before they set think "Oh got to take my own bags" you don't do you, you just pick up more when you get there and then most likely bin them when you get home or use them as a bin!

yep, you've got something for free for years, thats going to take another few hundred years to get rid of, yet you complain

Do you really think they haven't been putting money on the goods you buy to cover the cost??? Really??? :loopy:

Years ago they did LJ, that was the first thing you had in your hand when leaving the house, a basket or a net bag, now most people have cars to put there stuff in so it's easier just to chuck the plasict bags in in back seat, i have loads of plastic bags and re-use them for rubbish and other things,

Its yet another money-making scam from all shops and soon supermarkets to starve you of your money and blame it on the earth warming up!

Actually M&S are donating all the money from the bags to charity. I suspect most the large chains will do the same.

As for people moaning about having to pay for a bag, shame on you. Its not hard to remember to take a bag with you its like remembering to take your car keys if you want to drive your car. Stop being so lazy and narrow minded. Buy a bag for life and engage your brains cells to such a level that you remember to take it with you before you go. I'd be quite happy to see supermarkets charge £1 a bag if thats what it took to reduce the number of bags used. Ireland have set a good example banning carrier bags in some areas and only using papers bags which are charged for.

Polythene bags have always cost a few pence, they just gave them away for free as they absorbed the cost into the rest of their produce. Why do you think places like Aldi that have always charged for bags are so cheap?

To be honest, in this day and age of 15p fabric bags capable of withstanding a direct nuclear strike, I don't understand why anyone would deliberately choose a tatty polythene carrier.

I'd just buy the bags at 5p rather than take some with me on my way out. I don't have a problem with paying at all, just think it's all gone a but environment mad!
