Telephone master socket

Any telecoms staff on here?I'm just trying to save my mum from paying BT £106 to have a look at her telephone system.

The problem she has is that all of her phones stopped working on Tuesday.I went to her house and couldn't find the fault.I took the front off the mastersocket and plugged a phone in the internal socket. This worked fine and I could dial out.

Once i put the front back on and plugged the phone in the regular front socket I could not get a dialling tone.

Any ideas? Is the socket broken and is it down to BT to fix.

If the system is faulty there shouldn't be any charge from BT.

I believe they are only responsible for the line up to the house, any internal wiring is the customer's responsibility so they charge you for any work. At least, that's what I've previously been told when I reported a fault.

That seems about right. They are looking to charge so i just thought I would try to sort it myself.

I put a couple of extensions in for her about 10 yrs ago and they worked ok until the other day.

You are right.

The BT line ends at that test socket, beyond that is the customer's responsibility.

It sounds as ifthe face plate is kaput.

Buying a new one shouldn't cost you too much and it's a DIY replacement.

BT's charges are EXTORTIONATE.

2 weeks ago I e mailed BT with this problem.

I have just received a reply.

you would incur a charge for an engineer to call-out to replace your main BT socket. Charges incurred would be as follows:-

One off call-out charge for the engineer - £116.33 including VAT

plus

Hourly rate for work carried out - £99.88 including VAT (minimum charged = 1 hour).

Gulp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought that the master socket was down to BT and they should repair it. They have replaced them for us in the past where there have been line issues.

That is the case, for both broadband and home phone faults. Trouble is, it works in the test socket so it's definitely something to do with the internal wiring which is where BT will start wanting to charge. It could be the wiring on the back of the master socket faceplate as that's where the extension wires terminate. There's a few wiring guides online that might help, can't think of any off the top of my head though.

Tell a lie, here's one.

Thanks for that. The best solution for me would be to get hold of a faceplate for the socket and try that.Any ideas where I could get one locally.

Try Maplins i think there is one in the centre of Sheffield.

Bardwells? If not I'd be surprised if DIY shops like wickes or B&Q didn't sell them.

Alternatively (especially if you have broadband) you could go online to somewhere like broadbandbuyer and get one of these filter faceplates, that'll replace your existing one and should improve the BB signal at the same time (though it will mean that you have to plug your modem or router into the master socket).

Hope that helps,
