SpeedDemon Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Hi - I have an african grey which i bought from Harlingtons. Every now and again, i go back there to stock up on new toys for him as they have a very good range and are reasonably priced. I'd go more often if it wasn't so far here's the link http://harlingtonworldofpets.co.uk
lowby Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 As SpeedDemon says Harlingtons is pretty good. Also my brother used to get some of his from thorsby market.
medusa Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Find someone with a fruit tree that they don't spray with chemicals and cut down some branches that you can use to make toys and really lovely substantial perches. All you have to do is to scrub the bark and then you can turn some into perches that you can move about to give variety for him in his cage, then cut the rest up into pieces, drill a big hole down the middle to thread onto some soft cotton rope with knots tied in between chunks. You can drill other holes to make the pieces good for hiding food inside, holding pieces of fruit or vegetables or put bells or whatever on or in them. If you make the rope long enough then the strings can be tied to the cage making them strong enough for him to climb on them or make them into swings for when he's a bit stronger and can have a play on them. The best part is that apart from the cost of the rope it's all free.
SpeedDemon Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 What a great idea! God I'm so lazy, always just buy mine, but have bought similar things, made from branches and ropes when my next door neighbour has a big apple tree! DUH! Will make note to ask neighbour, as Pikelet is in dire need of some new toys himself - he's chewed most of the ropes on them now. Cheers for the idea Medusa
ami_j Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 what a brilliant idea will defo look into all these ideas hes not too interested with toys at them moment but once hes settled in he will need to keep his mind sharp
BlackVelvet Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 we took down the large cherry tree in our back garden last year and saved a load of branches off it. Our grey loves sttripping off the bark etc. Harlingtons have the best selection of parrot toys (and the nicest bred parrots too!). P@H and jollyes do some, but be selective as some dont stand up to the attentions of a large parrot. there are some good online sites for them too. We got our bird a selection from one (cant remember the addy though?)
medusa Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 For anyone local, you're more than welcome to come and hack down parts of my apple tree for use for birds, small animals and the like. In fact, anyone who has birds and also happens to be a tree surgeon would be most useful to me, since the tree needs crowning
