After last weeks 14 mile walk, I woke up on Sunday morning, felt fine except my big toe hurt when i either touched it or walked. So I inspected it and couldnt see anything wrong no bruising and wasnt broken. It seemed to get better, had a few twinges of pain in the week, but nothing bad. Then this morning, a week later I got up and it really hurts and has gone reddish purple in colour under the nail! Maybe I just caught it on something and its bruised but it just seems odd not to see anything till a week later! How odd?

Sounds like an infection to me. It might sound ridiculous, but is there any way that you might have got a splinter in it? If you have, then they can stay under your skin for ages without causing too much discomfort until all of a sudden where it is becomes infected.

Don't want to worry you, but if it is infected you need treatment, and sooner rather than later. Why not call the NHS Direct. I heard an ad on the radio for it today, and they said you could ring up for advice about anything. (Not that I would myself cos I'm never ill :))

The number is 0845 464748.

Hope it turns out to be nothing.

Years ago, my husband ran in the Sheffield Marathon. He had a similar experience of bruising, eventually turning black under several of his toenails. It took a few weeks for it to clear, ad he didn't lose any nails. Hopefully, you'll know by now what your's is! hope it's not painful.

Not sure if this help to explain one of the reason for the falling toe nail. I experience the same thing when I was playing football wearing a boot which is slightly tight, so the hard running and pressure on the toe nail bruises it. I think the same theory is applicable to any extreme or taxing sports, such as marathon or long hiking or walk, especially if wearing new footwear or wrong sized footwear. Were you wearing new footwear at that time? Just my guess.

Bet it was a false toe nail really. Are the other nine still attached?
