Favourite on-road cycle rides

Would any other of the forum's cyclists like to share their favourite bike rides?

Most weekends I like to have a ride of around 50-60 miles, ideally through pleasant countryside that's "rolling" but not really steep, and with a decent real ale pub or two along the way. Latterly however I've started to feel a bit uninspired and in need of new ideas of good rides to do. It's very much an on-road touring bike so off-road trails are out, but any ideas would be more than welcome......

Oh, and without being too specific, rides that start and end at rail stations (linear or circular) would be best as, apart from the bike itself, I don;t have my own transport.

Why not go up to the peak district?

I'm not really sure where is good around Sheffield as I used to do most of my riding further south in the west midlands!

I rode from Hunters Bar to Castleton a few times years ago - 15 miles each way, but the best bit is it is pretty much exactly 7.5 miles up hill (exercise, but not a killer) and then 7.5 miles downhill. There are loads of pubs in Castleton, and there is the Fox Hole or whatever it is called half way there.

What area do you live in?

If you are on the West side of Sheffield, there are loads of great rides in Derbyshire (the best in the country) if you are happy to ride 50-60 miles. Some with good pubs en route.

Look towards Monsal (The Stables is a good real ale pub), Taddington, Monyash, Hartington, Earl Sterndale, Elton.

If you want to go a bit further (more like a 70-80 mile ride from Sheffield), head towards the Goyt Valley, Danebridge, Wincle. There's a cracking real ale pub called the Ship near Wincle.

Or closer to home, around Strines - fewer cars than most of Derbyshire and I think the Strines pub and one or two in Bradfield are good, serving Farmer's Ales (based in Bradfield).

Go out one a club ride for inspiration. Not many will be up for a pint though. But you could get some ideas for routes.
