low_carbon Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 According to the Council, the following places have vacancies: S2 – Manor * S5 – Brushes S5 – High Wincobank * S6 – Rivelin Valley S20 – Moss Way, Sothall Green. Looking at where you're likely to move to, none of them is very suitable. Even though Manor is in S2 it's the South side and a very hilly cycle ride on busy roads. There are a lot of allotments near to where you might be living (though your area seems quite large). Unfortunately they all have waiting lists (some are months, some are years). I'm on Meersbrook which has 400 plots and a reasonable waiting list (turnaround seems to be 6 months ish). Having said that the allotments on offer are likely to be overgrown unless you're very lucky. I don't know the waiting lists on the other sites but if you ask the allotment office they will be able to tell you numbers but probably not the expected time before you get to the top. The allotments that are likely to be near to you in S2/S8/S7 are: S2 -Heeley Green (Derby Street) S8 -Meersbrook S8 -Norton Lees S8 -Warminster Road S8 - Archer Road S8 - Woodseats S7 - Brincliffe Edge I'm unsure of the S10 places but they include: Crookes Quarry Hagg Lane Rivelin Hagg House I'm sure others will fill in any gaps. As soon as you know where you'll be moving to get on the waiting list, invest in a machete and learn how to wield a chain saw.
Noodle Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I'm sure others will fill in any gaps. As soon as you know where you'll be moving to get on the waiting list, invest in a machete and learn how to wield a chain saw. Ho ho, people will think you're exaggerating!! Yep, It's the truth. I hoped to be planting by now (four months on) but am still fighting the weeds and old carpet!
RobD1 Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 In S10 you can add Marsh Lane and Bolehill Quarry to the list. Don't expect to get in Marsh Lane or Crookes Quarry any time soon, they're both small sites with very long waiting lists. Hagg House you will need the machete and/or chainsaw, but there's a nice community down there now and it's probably the most likely to get a vacancy first. Rivelin Valley is probably S6, but it's literally over the road from the Hagg House site. I've attempted to mark the sites on a Google map, but not sure if it will work. If it does you'll see they're all quite close to one another around there, but it doesn't show the hills... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=102192310925575778587.00044739e12e1a59b38ba&ll=53.393105,-1.505041&spn=0.024977,0.079823&z=14
Noodle Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I'd go on the list sooner rather than later. It took us a year and a half to get a plot. When you know where you're heading, ring the alotment office. At worst (or best!) they'll offer you a plot straight away. We didn't do much at first because we were in shock at what we'd got ourselves into and I think they expect a little time before you get started. Our plot size is 300 m2. There is some that seem to be half of ours. It is frightening the amount to do!
low_carbon Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I think ours is approx. 340 or 380 sqM. We're trying hard to get allotments back into use after a long period of neglect. Part of this is 'encouraging' people who rent plots but don't work them to give them up. Maybe by the time you arrive in Sheffield the situation will be better. Fingers crossed...
