We don't have a car. Don't see the point in the expense of one when living in a city with a decent public transport system. We live on a bus route and not far from a tram stop so no cars for us!:D

Ooh, a whole 45 minutes (assuming you mean 10-15 minutes total rather than each way).

It's no wonder the nation is becoming obese!

PS that didn't mean you are obese, it's just an example of the attitude...

I did mean total yes.

A whole 45 minutes, twice a week in whatever weather we have.

On thursday that would mean the earliest I could get back from teaching the session would be 11:00, and that's assuming I shower and head straight home.

Maybe 45 minutes doesn't seem like a lot, but 1.5 hrs a week, roughly 35 weeks a year adds up to two full days of walking to and from the dojo, instead of being in bed 30 minutes earlier (or later on a saturday).

Just checked with google and it's actually 1.7 miles with a driving time of 6 minutes. Which would make it a 34 minute walk.

I use mine because itis a dam sight more reliable than that poor excuse for a bus company we have in Sheffield. Its quicker, more comfortable, nearly as cheap and I can ave my music on as loud as i like

I use a car when my motorbike isn't appropriate or it's too dangerous. I dispise public transport and sadly enough know I can't rely on it. I don't have any transport to get me to a very important first day tomorrow, I'm going to catch the train but unfortunately I can't be trusting enough to catch the one I need so I'm going to have to catch the one before that just to be safe :( . Aside from the obvious; slow, uncomfortable, infested with a minority of morons who ruin it for others, unreliable, rude busdrivers side to buses my major quibble with them is the price! One day of to and from work on the bus is almost exactly the same price as my whole social, domestic and pleasure needs and 'commuting' on a motorbike for 7 days.

The cost of a journey by car divides into fixed costs and variable costs.

Fixed costs are depreciation, registration, insurance and such, with which you are stuck if you only drive 5 miles a week.

Variable costs are petrol, tyres, service..., the ones that depend on how much you drive.

So if you own a car at all, it makes sense to use it for every journey (except where it lands you with a parking cost equal to two train fares).

The "true cost" of Middlewood Rd to Holmesfield by car includes the fixed costs; it may be more than the bus fare.

But the "added cost" to a person who already has a car is much less.

How about driving to nursery leaving the car there and bussing in?

precisely what I do. occasionally I'll drive all the way to work, I confess, but only if i'm particularly stressed/miserable/feel unwell/have something heavy to carry.

I drive the 15 miles to and from work and although I've seen bus stops where I live, I think buses which go anywhere useful are a myth.

Having said that, when I lived less than 5 miles from work I still drove. I hated walking around the local area, hated some of the nastier local people.

With twins and work gear, changing bag and any accompanying snacks or toys, I simply can't imagine getting the bus.

I could get a train from here but it would cost more than the fuel, take more time, be far more unreliable than my car and involve walking my twins up a steepish hill at the other end, not so much fun.

We also visit the outlaws in a remote village in Bedfordshire, which has two buses per day and neither are from the nearest station.

Other than that we shop, visit and go out on leisure excursions.

I live 100 miles from the nearest city, so I have to use my car for that journey, as we don't have a rail link either. However I don't use the car for silly journey's like going to the newsagent or something.
