I know this is a bit off topic but what if the government dropped the duty/tax on new environmentally friendly cars in order to get more people buying them? For example, the Poly BlueMotion is a fairly eco-friendly car but at £11-12k for a decent model, wouldn't you rather buy a Ford Focus?

I think pay as you go motoring would be ideal really.

i use my car because i'm 9 months pregnant and its easier than having to waddle somewhere at a reeeeally slow pace just to be in pain afterwards. only passed a few months ago though so i don't yet know what its like to drive when not pregnant! maybe i'll walk a bit more then!

They do that already but only on a very very small number of cars because the government are only in it for the money and don't care about the environment. However the amount of duty paid on a car is only a small proportion of the total cost and removing it would make little difference. I haven't noticed a vast increase in the number of Toyota Prius on the road with their free tax, other than in London but that's to avoid congestion charge of £8 a day, a more substantial amount.

I suppose most people use their car because public buses are so unreliable, often dirty, overcrowed, cold in winter, hard seats, not enough leg room etc etc.

No they don't, they use them because buses don't go exactly where they want as you will find out if you ever pass your test.
