Marijuana - How Has It Affected You?

Just in quick reply to Waxon's earlier point, I've known about the problems for ages, I've just only recently admitted it to myself!

Well all that matters is you have admitted it. It could have carried on the same way for a long time. I wish you all the best of luck with it and hope you dont see my posts as a dig. I personally think that when you get over the hardest part you will start to see the benefits of a clearer head. All the best for the future.

But looking at someone's behaviour doesn't tell you the whole picture, even if you know them well.

I think the point I was trying to make was that there is a large amount of people who do it in moderation and that you need to take into account the fact that not everyone is greatly susceptible to full-blown psychosis/dependance/personality changes, especially if they only smoke in moderation.

Anyway I'm not a doctor either, just an opinion! I'd hate to be dependant on anything

edit: hmm just remembered my nicotine dependance!

One constant feature of cannabis withdrawal is a dream rebound. When you stop smoking you can experience a long period where your dreams are more vivid, more exhilarating and more persistent in memory.

As a more or less continuous smoker for the last 19 years or so it's not so much a recreational pursuit as a mental nutrient. I rarely get "stoned", and if I go without for any length of time, I develop a certain pining for it, but not enough to call it a craving.

The potent addictor in my case is the combination of tobacco and cannabis. Tobacco without cannabis is dry and sour, cannabis without tobacco frequently ends up with a "drug experience" which is not what I'm after. The two combined create a whole greater than the sum of its parts, an interaction as yet unstudied by pharmacological science.

I have asked myself whether cannabis has made me apathetic and forgetful, and I can honestly say, I was pretty apathetic and forgetful long before I smoked cannabis.

Quitting nicotine is a much tougher proposition.

That's interesting. I've never heard it referred to as a dream rebound before.

I always assumed that dreams were 'suppressed' or unremembered while smoking and then came back again when smoking ceased - and so appeared more vivid, because the dreams had stopped!

I've been told by several people that it's to do with the different stages of sleep. It's something along the lines of, "light sleep, heavy sleep and dream sleep", Dream sleep is in between the other two, not so heavy that you're dead to the world, not so light that you're technically awake but nicely in the middle, perfect for dreaming. Smoking (especially late night) keeps you firmly in heavy sleep, making it harder for dreams to form. I don't know any of that for definite, the part on the different sleep stages are true, but as for exactly how they work I'm not fully sure

Actually looking at someones behaviour is the biggest clue to what is going on in there head. If you look closely enough there are often significant patterns in they way a person behaves to give you an idea what is going on.

I agree I dont think people are as susceptable as each other. I was stating that Every single person I know that smokes weed has varying degrees of these side effects. Yes your right not everyone will suffer severe psycosis from the odd joint but it does affect them in a negative way in my experience. Im not trying to drag this into a for against debate. If you are an adult and smoke weed thats your choice. As an adult you are aware that it is illigal and that there is a chance that it could affect you in these ways. If you chose to smoke it anyway thats your perogative but dont be naive to its affects on others and yourself.

Looking at someone's behaviour is one clue, I've not denied that.

I'd agree with you that the worst thing you can do is go into these things with naivety. There are side effects with any drug (depending on a number of factors) and it's up to the individual.

people can take cocain, esctacy, trips, ket with no effects if they take it in the right enviroment, know what they are doing and it is done in moderation.

doing something now and then doesnt harm you and i think this is a subject you can only really talk about if you have experimented.

Blimey, shame they don't have a money-back offer, isn't it? ;)

I think this is all heading a bit off-topic - as waxon has said, there's no need for this thread to turn into a pro or anti argument.

Although I have never smoked it in my life it has still affected me. The presence of drugs in nightclubs has detered me from visiting them at times. Not always - I have been to clubs but I feel I would have gone to them more if it were not for drugs.
