Atheism or Humanism?

I just don't understand how anyone can believe in god - to me it seems ridiculous to think we were created by an omnipotent and omniscient being in his own image. I'm not trying to be rude to believers here, I just genuinely cannot get my head around that point of view.

Man or God?

Man everytime.

The idea of God was brought up to confuse and mislead people. I've never seen or "felt" God, so to me there isn't one. The main argument for God is when people say that He's given us free will and isn't allowed to interfere. Well, if you have all of this ultimate power, power to control and affect our lives for the better, but aren't allowed to use it, what's the point in being a God?

You don't have to get your head round it, I follow the teaching of Jesus Christ which gives you a whole new perspective on life.

Others say they have tried it and it hasn't worked for them, but it works for me and I am testimony to it so I know it is not ridiculous.

I'm an atheist but I don't agree with humanism. To me it seems like a contradiction.

One of the things that I disagree with about religion is the organised belief system that comes with it. It's not just a case of believing that there's some form of sentient creator, but also being obliged to adhere to a set of rules defined in one of the holy books (bible, koran, torah, book of mormon etc). Organised religions set themselves up as middle men by claiming that in order to believe in a god, you have to worship their way.

Humanism attempts to do the same for atheism. It says "if you don't believe in a god, then this set of rules defines how not to believe in one". It's essentially replacing a set of religious rules with a set of non-religious ones. Atheism means not signing up to one of the organised religions. Atheists shouldn't be lumped together in a category of their own and given their own set of rules to follow. As an adult I know how to live my life, so I don't need a set of rules to "guide" me.

You don't need to think about it if you follow any organised religion, because you are told what to think and not to question the word of a anecdotal book!

Man every time, not myths

I believe in a form of God I suppose. I mean it all seems to complex to be a coincidence to me. But I don't believe in Jesus / Mohammad or anything like that. I've contemplated this quite a lot as I'm sure everybody has, and gave up on the basis that there's no proof of any existing belief.

You still haven't given me your coat and a hundred pounds, or gone out and bought a sword, so you aren't following it that closely. Do you hate your father, mother, children, brother and sisters? Jesus said that was a prerequisite for following him.

I told you to go down to social security for it and give them my name.

The other thing you are on about is that we are told to hate anything that comes in the way of following Jesus.

I don't want to get into a big religious debate, but surely that's a waste of energy?

Over the last couple of years, I have learnt that hating anything or anyone is pointless as I just makes you feel negative.

I was out with a christian last night who told me it's not what you do that's sin, what matters is your distance from god. I was told that compassion is meaningless unless you are 100% compassionate and pure. I think these ideas stink.
