shoeshine Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Why is it that Media/Press/TV News reporting of Court cases always refer to defendants as Mr/Mrs/Ms etc throughout a trial, and to suit the PC Brigade remains so, I understand, when personally addressed by Prison Officers if found guilty and incarcerated at Her Majesty's Pleasure. Referring to them by surname only seems to be "un-PC" when it comes to reporting publically notable and decent people when they die. This is a recent phenomena adopted by the "Media" and really gets me revving! An example:- Announced today..The death of Emily Perry (actress) at the age 100...... BBC News today Actress Emily Perry, who played Dame Edna Everage's sidekick Madge Allsop, has died at the age of 100. The performer, who played the megastar's taciturn and long-suffering bridesmaid for many years, was 80 when she first took on the role in 1987. Perry appeared on Dame Edna's ITV star-studded shows and travelled the world as part of comic Barry Humphries' stage spectaculars. She lived at Brinsworth House, a London retirement home for entertainers. and it goes on: Devon-born Perry - who was known as Pat - ran a children's dancing school for 25 years before finding fame late in life. Speaking to the BBC News website last year ahead of her 100th birthday, Perry said: "You know, my memory's gone. I've been all around the world with Barry, and I can't remember a thing." No wonder I get revved up, is there? I'll stand corrected and shut my gob if any of the statements I've made in this post are erroneous. Link

Strix Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 inappropriate forms of address bug hell out of me - it demonstrates the ignorance of the addressee don't start me off though, coz I'll start complaining about how we're expected to answer the phones these days with so much blether that nobody can actually digest whether they've got through to the right department or not
