Fidel Castro Resigns - What now for Cuba?

My ex-girlfriend is American, and she couldn't wait to leave the 'small minded' country. I'm very sure she would have danced in the streets if George Bush became ill too! On the other hand, her mother never wanted to even leave her state, and wouldn't stand to even listen to people speak ill of the President. You get that to varying degrees in all countries.

I believe that many Cubans love Castro, just as some hate him and are drawn to the wealth that they believe is available in America but not in Cuba.

Fair point Snook. Like I said you have to go on personal experience and if I had to choose to be poor in either Cuba, Kenya ,Dominican Republic or even America I would choose Cuba.

It will be interesting to see what will happen now. In the short term Raul Castro will I assume take over and there will be little change. However he is an old man himself and there will be a power struggle sooner or later.

I do get worried when Bush says that America are willing to help Cuba towards a democratic future!

Barny_100 you don't know who I am and people who know me would find it hysterical to find me called a left winger.

I don't know, I've never met anyone from Cuba who left to go to America. I can only talk from my experiences.

The people I met in Cuba adored him.

The people I met in Cuba all had a roof over their head.

The people I met in Cuba all had access to free education.

The people I met in Cuba all had access to free health care.

Yes, I admit they are deprived of some of their liberties but as third world countries go it was the best I've ever been to.

When a recent hurricane hit Cuba thousands upon thousands of people were evacuated for their own safety. It not something that the US managed with Katrina was it?

It makes a refreshing change to hear such a positive experience of Cuban life, as opposed to the usual American propaganda.

Great post, Sanman

I fear for the future of the people of Cuba though, now they won't have the strongman Castro to protect them from US hegemony, which will now undoubtedly come, sooner rather than later, probably :(

Why does everyone who lives in a poor country seem to believe that just by living in a wealthy country, they themselves will automatically be wealthy members of that society? I've never been able to get my head round that.

It must be the Dick Whittington syndrome, streets paved with gold and such.

I don't think that they automatically expect to become wealthy.

However, many people follow the natural human instinct to seek the opportunity to improve their lot. An option not freely available in Cuba.

(are people still peddling the myths about superior Cuban healthcare and education?)

That was no myth, Tony - despite the best attempts of the US blockade

I won't get into an argument but it is a myth... a communist myth... blockade or no blockade.

I'm sure that you can do your own research.

I've already done my research on it thanks, Tony - while I was at university  What about you?
