Wedding dresses - all dress talk here!

Recommended Posts

Hiya My friend runs a bridal shop and they are having a massive sale at Tapton Hall i think its on the 15th of April. The dresses are going to be really cheap, like from £150. They are all ex samples but it might mean you can more for your money and you could always sell it on afterwards?!

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a wedding dress to hire, does anyone know of any shops that provide this instead of buying a dress?

We are getting married 18 months earlier than expected due to family circumstances so our budget is very tight and can't afford to buy an expensive dress.

I have looked at several dresses from debenhams etc which have been nice and reasonable money, however I'm just wondering if I could get a dress that's a bit more special by hiring it rather than buying?

Any help is appreciated as this is all a lot quicker than I anticipated and don't really know where to start at the moment! Thanks :)

Not exactly a hire dress company - but they are very reasonable and can get a made to measure dress for you in 4-6 weeks after submitting your measurements - they also have ex-display/sample dresses in their Ebay shop

Bespoke collection of dresses, but with just a few I found it hard to chose!

Is the mermaid bridal gown appropriate for chubby ladies?

I say wear any dress you want. If you want a mermaid dress, then you try out a mermaid dress, If you feel confident and happy in it then thats all that matters.

no,as far as i know...mermaid gowns are tight..they are highlighting your body silhouette..so i think it`s not appropriate :)

Don't let people like the above commenter decide what is and isn't appropriate, its you who will be wearing the dress at the end of the day, who gives a stuff about what anyone else thinks?

Just wondering if you're able to go and 'look' in wedding dress shops without an appointment. I'm not ready to try any on, but I wouldn't mind a browse.

A lot of shops are really funny about that sort of thing, I think you would still be best off ringing in advance to say you just want to browse - stupid I know! You are also more likely to be able to walk in and browse on a weekday.

I got my dress yesterday!! Sorry, I am very excited... The main reason I am posting though is that I just wanted to offer a recommendation for Emily Bridal which is where I bought my dress from. The dress itself was amazing but even if I hadn't found 'the one' there I would still be recommending that people visit because the service was amazing. It was Saturday and obviously busy but I never felt rushed, there didn't seem to be a limit on how many dresses I could try on (when I had narrowed it down to two they were happy to let me try them both on again), and I was made to feel really really special. Also I am a curvy 14 and even though a couple of the samples were a bit too small for me I was not made to feel like this was a problem. My 'entourage' was treated really well too, with coffee etc. When I found the one I liked they spent ages making suggestions of how I could personalise it a bit. The changing area was really lovely, and private.

I had another appointment in another bridal shop straight after and so I decided to not commit to the dress until I had been in another shop, I went to the other shop and found nothing even remotely as amazing so I went back to Emily and they even let me try on the dress again, despite having other people to see to, and gave me and my ladies champagne to celebrate!

I felt amazing the whole time I was there, and the whole experience was exactly what you would hope for for this special day. And no, I don't work for them and I'm not related to them!

A place I certainly won't be recommending to people is Pronuptia - tried on quite a few dresses here but the samples were dirty and torn (and seemed quite out of date too), the changing area was a tiny curtained-off booth and they kept bringing people through the area where I was trying dresses on. I felt rushed here, I know it was a Saturday and its a busy time of year, but buying a wedding dress is a massive decision, and I won't be inclined to buy one anywhere I felt rushed. A friend of mine has had a bad experience with them after ordering her dress from there and yesterday really did nothing to change my mind about them.

Good luck to everyone looking for their dress!

I agree, although I didn't end up buying my dress from Emily Bridal the service and atmosphere there was lovely. Very polite and as mentioned you weren't made to feel rushed, and guests where treated nicely. I ended up buying my dress from Freya Bridal which is sadly closing down. Beautiful dress, excellent service and they have a sale on at the moment (due to closing)....

2 months to go!

Hello everyone - just thought I'd mention this for anyone who is on a tight budget and looking for a vintage dress. My budget was £500 so I had to stay away from all the amazing looking traditional wedding dress shops. There aren't too many specialist vintage wedding dress shops in the north of England - I ended up going to see a lady in Oakham who has a showroom in the front room of her immaculately done out vintage house. Just beautiful and also quite a nice drive down from Sheffield on a Saturday morning. She has a great range of vintage dresses, 1920's onwards - some lovely accessories and headpieces - and also some vintage Japanese wedding kimonos! I can't add a link as I'm new but if you search for Abigail's Vintage on Google it comes up straight away :)

Hello!

I'm after advice on a dress on a budget. I'm looking at £500 so alas, I'm going to have to avoid Blissful Daze, Emily and The White Room.

Any recommendations for where a more budget bride should try?

One of my friends got her dress from New York Bridal in Eckington - they have a lot of samples/last season dresses so you can get some bargains!
