Google Maps - No more "vanilla" satellite images?

Recommended Posts

I was just playing with Google Maps - maps.google.co.uk - looking at the new "Terrain" feature, when i realised that there's no longer separate options for Satellite (just aerial photos) and Hybrid (aerial with roads overlaid). Choosing Satellite now just gives you what was known as Hybrid.

:(

When I last played about with it there were options to turn off the markings/buildings/pretty much all the terrain features in a list in the bottom left, is it possible to turn off roads and names there? I must admit that was a fair few months ago...

Can't see any option like that...

(I am talking about Google Maps btw, not Google Earth)

I was just going to say I'm looking at 'Earth Tools' now and satellite only is still an available option.

Is Google maps somehow better than Earth Tools ?

I think they're trying to encourage people to use Google Earth instead of maps, Earth caches data a lot better so I'd imagine it'd save them a couple of MB a month.

There's a little tick box on the satellite button to turn the roads and labels off. Love the terrain feature.

A-ha! i'd not noticed that... hadn't let my mouse linger over the Satellite button for long enough.

Cheers!
