What to see in Sheffield?

What would the best highlights be in sheffield to see when on a weekend getaway there?

Thanks

LOL!

Not much. The winter gardens will take you all of 15 minutes to walk around. The galleries are ok, but very small and rarely have any interesting displays. The Kellham Island museum is worth visiting if you like that sort of thing but it's out of the way and I don't think any busses go near it.

To be honest our best attraction is the peak district. Go to the Dewent dam visitor centre - see the Dambusters exhibition and walk around in the peaks for an afternoon.

If you like a generic shopping experience that you can get in any city in the UK then feel free to walk around the city centre and take a trip to meadowhell.

Don't listen to ptigga, there is a lot to see in Sheffield. Come and enjoy it!

You didn't say what you were interested in, but here the highlights:

City Centre:

The area around the Cathedral: the Catherdral itself (tram stop Church Street/Cathedral), Cutlers Hall, then Paradise Square.

Wander up Fargate for (the usual) High Street shops, check out the Catholic Cathedral (Pugin design and stunning modern stained glass window), then the Tudor Square around the theatres, the Winter Gardens and Millennium Square and Peace Gardens, then over Barkers Pool to Devonshire Square (Division Street), trendy area, then get on the 61 bus to the Botanical Gardens.

If you want run of the mill shopping, Meadowhall.

The theatre complex is the largest anywhere in the UK outside London, and if mass doesn't mean class, then it's reassuring to know that Sheffield theatres have class, too.

Othe tips: If you like historic churches: Norton, St Mark's (Broomhill), St Matthew's (Carver Street), United Reformed Chapel (Norfolk Street).

Musuems: Millennium Galleries (have a fine display of Sheffield of Sheffield cutlery), Graves Art Gallery (in the Library at Tudor Square), the City Musuem at Weston Park is closed for a refit, but the industrial heritage is best seen at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet (just what is says) at Millhouses/Dore, Kelham island (central, near Fat Cat, a very good real ale pub), and Shepherd's Wheel (Endcliffe Park-ish).

The Broomhill area is an English Heritage conservation area and was described by poet laureate Betjeman ("Oh come bombs and fall on Slough") as England's prettiest suburb. Leafy, intellectual Middle England very close to the city centre. (That's what John Snow always says on election night when people wonder why the Tories, now the Lib dems win their only northern metropolitan seat in Sheffield, Hallam).

Parks: Sheffield is green, enjoy it. Endcliffe Park, Botanical Gardens and (for something unexpected) Firth Park, Roe Wood (ancient wood in the Pitsmoor area near the Northern General Hospital) and Crabtree are my hightlights.

The Peak Distrct of course for a Sunday walk. Castleton and Bakewell are very good.

I'm sure many others here will try their best to make constrctive suggestions!

Yes, agree, there is plenty to do depending on your interests. Add Whirlow Park, Graves Park and Rivelin Valley for green spaces. Five Weirs Walk and Victoria Quays for more industrial heritage. Loads of good places to eat, both daytime and evening - see other Forum threads for ideas. And wherever you go you will probably come across plenty of very friendly people who will have their own favourite things to recommend

Nicely said fhain29 !

Apart from the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, which is in Beauchief/Abbeydale. Not Millhouses, or even less Dore ;)

It opens on the week-ends.

why not Beauchief Gardens, Limb Brooks Woods (Ryecroft Glen), Thomas Becket's church (Beauchief Golf Course), Graves Park, Norfolk Park (yes there are a lot)...

Kelham Island Museum is only a 10 minute walk from High Street, The 53 bus passes close and Shalesmoor tramstop is also nearby.

There are also some excellent pubs and bars surrounding it, including the Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern and Riverside cafe bar. Oh and Manchester Hotel and Nags Head.

Add to that, Rother Valley, yes a man made park but a beauty all the same with ducks, geese etc.

Heeley City Farm is nice if you have kids and you can buy lunch, plants all sorts of things.

Ice skating, not all cities have ice rinks, we have two.

Birley Spa, an old victorian bathing spa if I recall correctly, I remember playing down there as a child.

Graves Park has some gorgeous wood carvings in amongst the trees to be found on a pleasant walk.

The Ski Village - again as the 4th largest city we are priveliged to have good recreation facilities.

The remains of Sheffield Castle of of interest to some and you can visit The Queens Head pub in the bus station, allegedly the oldest pub and it links to the castle via underground chambers.

And Bishops House in Shefield, Norton Lees area, possibly the oldest standing example of such quality, an old Tudor (?) house by Meersbrook Park.

Well, just reading al that, you need a least a week to visit!.

Looks as though you should come back again another time.

My favourite walk is Padley Gorge at Fox House and some of the English Heritage sites.

There are so many parks here that you can spend 2 days just looking around those. The walled garden in Meersbrook Park is worth a visit but does not open on a Sunday( apart from it is open this Sunday) It is called the secret garden as not many people actually know it is there!

If you like shopping, try the cosmopolitan area of Ecclesall Rd.

Meadowhall is Meadow hell at this time of year.
