fabulous_girl   10 #25 Posted October 29, 2007 I would definitely see a doctor. Stress can cause alopecia, like in gail porter's case.  My friend was losing a lot of hair and it turned out to be linked to a cyst on her ovary (dont ask how it was linked, i'm not a doctor!). scary stuff, but i would definitely see a doctor, its better to know so you have the chance to do something about it
 Share this content via...
pippadoll   10 #26 Posted October 29, 2007 Female hair loss is quite common, so don't feel bad. A friend of mine is going to the specialist today, so when I hear something I will post back.  We were talking about it yesterday and looked it up on the internet; there is a defininte link with vitamin deficiency: A, C, E, the B complex vitamins plus zinc. There is also a link to a lack of red meat in the diet (replace with eggs, proteins, lentils).  Dont' want to worry you but it is also linked to stress. Can be hormonal. Can be linked to polycystic ovaries Also a symptom of the menopause  I would recommend getting it checked out wtih GP and then seeing a hair specialist if possible. NEKRO138 Â Â 10 #27 Posted October 29, 2007 My girlfriend had alopecia, although she could always style her hair in a way to cover it up. She still has some short white hairs where the hair has started growing again. Â Don't worry about it too much. No one will think any worse of you. No one worth bothering with anyway. lacey983 Â Â 10 #30 Posted November 1, 2007 Hi Lacey, how did you get on at the Drs? I hope everything turned out OK. Â hi Miller, the doctor just asked my age and when he realised i am over 40 he just said "oh it's your age then !" he didn't seem to think it was anything other than a natural thinning ! medusa   16 #31 Posted November 1, 2007 I lost most of my hair due to long term chemo. On my wedding day I painted my scalp brown so that it didn't show through so much on photos. At the same time as I started to lose my hair the stuff that didn't fall out became curly, which was a good thing because it bulked up what I had so it didn't look so thin.  Most women have some sort of thinning of their hair related to the menopause, so I'm not surprised that your GP thinks that it's not a problem- but he's not the one living with it is he? You're perfectly within your rights to ask for a referral to a trichologist if you feel that your hair loss is unusual.  If your hair loss is linked to the menopause then something as simple as HRT can make your hair regrow, but I'd ask about the other side effects and risks of the treatment if you're thinking of that.  During all of the chemo I also went through my menopause artificially early (I had my ovaries removed) but I'm very pleased to say that my menopausal hair loss is less than my chemo hair loss so it's growing back nicely now (it's still curly though). Merry_Legs   10 #32 Posted November 1, 2007 He should at least have offered a blood test to check thyroxin and ferritin levels. If it's hormonal you could maybe try the pill. I'd go back and let them know how much it's upsetting you and perhaps see a female doctor.
 Share this content via...
Applegrim   10 #33 Posted November 1, 2007 Hi, sorry to hear about your hair, this has to be one iof the most embarassing things that can happen to a lady, you need to see a Dermatologist and your doctor needs to refer you.I lost all mine after having a stroke, but I'm sure it's stress related, the dematologist gave me Betnovate scalp application, it's just a clear liquid that has to be rubbed into your scalp morning and evening, the doctor made no promises, but my hair did return so don't think yours won't, I still sometimes have the problem but I just go back to the lotion, and I know this isn't easy, but the more you worry the worse it gets, so stop worrying, things can only get better.! lacey983 Â Â 10 #34 Posted November 1, 2007 even though my hair is tissue paper thin he looked thought it and said my scalp was ok , " no no dear there is no sign of alopecia, it's simply due to your age" which i think at 42 is rubbish! he knows i'm on antidepressants but never even suggested i could be over stressed , i distinctly got the impression he thinks i'm imagining it ! which is odd as when i go on the web cam to my parents you can see right through my hair making my mother very concerned
 Share this content via...
sophiec1979 Â Â 10 #35 Posted November 2, 2007 even though my hair is tissue paper thin he looked thought it and said my scalp was ok , " no no dear there is no sign of alopecia, it's simply due to your age" Â how reassuring! what a lovely bedside manner. Â i would seriously consider trying to make an appointment with a different GP within your surgery and explain your worries. Â also try medusa's advice and ask to be referred to a trichologist. Â i really hope you get some satisfaction second time round- im a great believer in "if at first....":) Â Â x
 Share this content via...
