Goooooogle   10 #1744 Posted November 10, 2016 While we are talking about the fish/batter sticking to the paper can I get some feedback? I have been to the fish fryers convention and they are trying to push the cardboard boxes in a big way (like pizza boxes). They are claiming customers like fish/CHIPS better in boxes than paper. The cheapest I can get the boxes from my suppliers are 15p each! This would have to be added to the cost of the portion. So do you guys like paper or boxes. I do enjoy my chips wrapped in paper and I always eat them from the paper. But saying that I obviously don't go anywhere else to buy them (if you get my drift lol)  Boxes for me - they always go soggy when wrapped in paper.  The best places I have eaten F&C (including 149 at Bridlington , North Bay Fisheries Scarbro' and Whitby's at Catcliffe) , they are always served in boxes.  I think it shows the shop actually gives a stuff about the presentation.  My opinion on the shops in Sheffield , could do better.... And some are barely edible.
 Share this content via...
sedith   19 #1745 Posted November 10, 2016 Hangar Hill S80 4SD number 26 if you have a sat nav  ---------- Post added 08-11-2016 at 23:14 ----------   We sell 3 sizes, cone of chips, 1 pint pot size and 2 pint pot size (we measure them in stainless steel pots). We sell more cone size portion as people either want "just a few" and to be honest we basically sell a scoop for £1.20 so I would rather sell them. Or it's the other way people want a large portion and complain there are not enough. One man last week complained because he wanted the large portion to feed 4 people lol.  I'm in West Somerset but when I'm up visiting family in Sheffield I'll call in and give you guys a try. You certainly have some good reviews on here! The fish and chips are pretty poor down here generally.
 Share this content via...

And some are barely edible.  I think fish n chips do go soggy if you sprinkle them with salt and vinegar and wrap them up in paper. If however, you are eating them there and then, this isn't a problem. And I only tend to have fish n chips maybe once or twice a month if that. I prefer traditional methods - so it's paper for me every time - not polystyrene trays or boxes - or cones!  The best fish n chip shops I've tried are Bryan's at Headingley, near Leeds. The Magpie Cafe in Whitby. And nearer to home..."Margaret's" just off Whit Moor near Chesterfield. Tony's at Mosborough. And "A salt n battered" on London Road. DerbyTup   10 #1752 Posted April 7, 2017 Pop over to whitwell. I have a few posters off here that pop over. I will sort you out some discount.  I will give you a try Tim. As I mentioned, it's not a regular thing for me. (Used to be when I was a kid growing up in a mining village not too far from Whitwell as it happened). But you sound like a decent chap and I dare say I could find a good reason to come out that way - do a bit of cycling maybe and head out towards the beautiful Clumber Park area.  2 questions for you in the meantime:  I've read/heard that the Elm Tree Pub in Elmton does good food. It's not so far from you - have you tried it? What's your view?  Batter! it confounds me. I can make the perfect Yorkshire puddings (after years of trying I found a perfect method that ensures they rise up to the size of a small football every time!) but when it comes to making batter for fish...oh dear! It's never any good. It either doesn't stick to the fish or it sticks to it and comes out like toffee! Any tips for a simple batter recipe for fish?
