Industrial hamlet pond. Fish and wildlife being left high and dry ?

Recommended Posts

What's happening up there ? Seems they've netted some of the fish but those that remain are being left there to die, as this warm weather dries the place out. There's also a huge population of swan mussels that are being left to fend for themselves, with obvious consequences.

Anyone have any info ?

It rained very heavily last night so may have topped up a bit.

It looks like it's essential maintenance judging by the amount of silt. Shame that stuff will die, but maybe things'll thrive better when it's been dredged?

I just hope that while someone's got a bee in their bonnet about pond maintenance, they nip over to Forge Dam ... the island in the middle is reminiscent of Surtsey. Even the ducks have taken to paddling rather than swimming and the top end looks like primordial soup. Can't be good.

Project Updates

There will be increased activity around Abbeydale Dam starting from 17 March 2014 as part of a council run project to cure leaks from the Dam into Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. The Dam will be partly-drained during the project.

So says the SIMT website

Well ... that's the kiss of death then! :gag:

They've been trying to fix just a blocked drain further up the road at the Twentwell lane/Abbeydale Road junction for over a year. You'd have thought Abbeydale Hamlet would've got a reputable contractor in to do the job?

Its a disgrace Forge Dam used to be lovely when I was a kid, there even used to be rowing boats on there, they would be hard pressed to put a kids toy boat on it now!

Same with Graves Park, or the little pedal boats in High Hazels. Why did boating lakes die out?

I know at Graves park it was health & safety that caused them to remove the boats. If I remember correctly there was a drowning sometime in the 70's caused by a youth deciding it would be a good idea to take a swim on a hot summers day. There was also lots of vandalism where boats were getting sunk at nightime.
