transit man   10 #2 Posted October 22, 2010 Yes most damproofing companies will come out and do a free check and quote for the job at the same time, quite a few local companies in yellow pages.
 Share this content via...
platts   10 #3 Posted October 22, 2010 Hi Jennycakes  I would recommend Timberwise (the damp proof specialists) You wont get a free quote but for £80 you will get a detailed damp survey including a quote and professionals who know best.  After a few quotes and various visits we went with them and they are coming to do a damp proof course in our kitchen next week and were much better than any others who came round.  If you want any advise pls feel free to pm me.  P. HarrietStar   10 #5 Posted October 25, 2010 We used higginbottoms who gave a full survey, it was £30.
 Share this content via...
nickycheese   10 #6 Posted October 25, 2010 Beware damp companies doing surveys that identify work that they would profit from! Timberwise did a survey for us and recommended a lot of unnecessary work without even trying to identify where the damp was coming from.  Interesting info here: http://www.askjeff.co.uk/rising_damp.html
 Share this content via...
platts   10 #7 Posted October 25, 2010 Beware damp companies doing surveys that identify work that they would profit from! Timberwise did a survey for us and recommended a lot of unnecessary work without even trying to identify where the damp was coming from. Interesting info here: http://www.askjeff.co.uk/rising_damp.html   Out of interest what was this unnecessary work? We have Timberwise coming round tomorrow and as mentioned above I have been impressed by them so far.  The survey not only detailed exactly where the damp was etc but also what the causes would be which I have been sorting out. Dark Moomin   10 #8 Posted October 25, 2010 can anyone recommend an indepedent damp surveyor then? the survey on a house we are looking to purchase has come back with rising damp and the need for a full survey. The building surveyors are not damp proofing contractors so its not money making from them, but could well be back covering.  We want to know what we are getting into before going ahead with the purchase however.  Any advice? The building surveyors are not damp proofing contractors so its not money making from them, but could well be back covering. We want to know what we are getting into before going ahead with the purchase however.  Any advice?  This was the issue we faced after our homebuyers report so went with Timberwise who did a damp survey inc quote, then went back to owner and had the quote amount knocked off the house price.  Survey was £80 but got that knocked off as well.  GL.  http://www.timberwise.co.uk/timberwise-for-home/
 Share this content via...
Dark Moomin   10 #10 Posted October 25, 2010 but surely they have the same issues of not being independent?
 Share this content via...
doodle   10 #11 Posted October 25, 2010 I'm currently looking at getting a damp survey done as we have a problem. At first I found the timberwise, but like you Dark Moomin, I wanted an independent person and I came across two companies who do independent surveys: http://www.pdoyle.net and http://www.jhreesindependentsurveys.co.uk/  I can't vouch for them or there work, as I'm only in the enquiring stages of getting a report done, but hope this is helpful.
