How many rivers in Sheffield?

After a conversation in the local the other day, i wondered if any one can come up with the answer to this question.......

 

How many rivers run through sheffield, we got answers between 5 and 8, Don, sheaf, porter, etc.

 

didnt really answer conclusively, so i wondered if any of you lot could help.

What about Loxley, Riverlin, they are rivers but could be classed as streams because I think rivers run into the sea.

having said that the river Porter and sheaf both run into the Don, I think.:confused:

I think the definitive answer is that Sheffield has five rivers. Four of them (Sheaf, Rivelin, Porter and Loxley) are tributary rivers that run into the River Don.

That's the accepted list for rivers, but there are several smaller tributaries, eg Carrbrook, Meersbrook, Bagley Dyke, Limb Brook, Hartley Brook, Totley Brook etc. - some of which had water wheels on them in the old days.

And the May Brook which runs into the Porter, and supported 2 wheels in the past.

The rivers are

 

Don,

Loxley,

Sheaf,

Porter,

Rivelin;

 

there are the aforementioned "brooks" , such as the Meers brook etc,

 

Oh, and not forgetting the Shire brook, and the Moss brook...

Well I deliberately left a lot out to give someone else a shout ;):)

 

I do have afull list somewhere, but many now never see the light of day, having been culverted years ago.

Don't forget the Jervis Lum, which runs through Norfolk Park - though more of a stream than river.

The Jervis Lum was /is a stream ? I thought it was the name of a pub ! lol lol lol !

TO PLAIN TALKER AND REDROBBO IF THE JERVIS LUM RUNS THROUG NORFOLK PARK WERE DOES IT START I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT STARTED AT THE POND ON EASTERN AVE.
