Fermented foods

Recommended Posts

Theres been a lot of articles recently on fermented foods. The main one I saw was by Donna Schwenk, her website is http://www.culturedfoodlife.com.

It's really interesting. I've been trying milk kefir made from live kefir grains. I know kefir has a long history over hundreds of years but this is the first time I've heard of it. Anyway, my results have been hit and miss but I'm sticking with it for a while. I'm currently having a go at fermenting vegetables.

If anyone has digestive problems, it might be worthwhile having a look at Donna's website. The science behind it all sounds pretty good and I'm all for trying to improve things so that I don't get my GP just throwing pills at me for anything that could be improved by diet, in my case high blood pressure and cholesterol problems. No statins for me!!

I know that in SE Asia, you do get a lot of fermented food, but I wouldn't eat it in large volumes though. When you see say how the Koreans put their diet together or how the Japanese do it, they do actually make sure that the amount is small, and it is combined with other food together as well as more of a holistic experience.

I've been reading this last night. I think that detoxification is indeed necessary and then move onto a steady nourishing diet. This one is about detoxifying your liver, so that it can indeed clean out toxic things which you consume, and make your blood circulation flow again.

Have you tried it already ? Which one did you find worked for you and why ?

Hello all,

I am currently brewing Kombutcha and (milk) Kefir. I have plenty of mothers to spare if people are interested in trying it for themselves. From time to time I will have other interesting fermented products from, water Kefir to sour dough starters.

If you have any questions regarding the care of your cultures, or anything else then please feel free to ask!

There are a number of places around Sheffield where you can buy raw milk too. Manor Farm, Brimington S43, and Beltonville Farm, Sk17, opposite Millers Dale YHA spring to mind.
