metalman   21 #2749 Posted October 28, 2018 I'm reading 'Aberystwyth Mon Amour' by Malcolm Pryce, the first of a series in which he transplants Chandler/Hammett-style hardboiled detective noir style to the Welsh town with added surrealism. Very amusing and cleverly done.
 Share this content via...

ChrisIB   11 #2751 Posted November 24, 2018 Top secret alien abduction files : what the government doesn’t want you to know, Nick Redfern, 2018 It draws from FOI, contactee and abductee information and suggests several phases of alien activity. The early years, from the 50s, where contactees reported benevolent, non abduction type interactions. Intrigued governments began discreetly opening files. A second and more sinister phase from the sixties with abductions and experimentation. Governments became more proactive with monitoring and rapid response, black helicopter type reactions and occasionally their own abductions. Disinformation was used to limit widespread credence being given.
 Share this content via...
feargal   21 #2752 Posted November 30, 2018 I'm reading Mythos by Stephen Fry, which is very good. I've tried to read about the Greek myths before, but the books always end up too dry. This one is very light hearted and is full of useless facts, and nuggets about which words have their origins in the gods' names. metalman   21 #2753 Posted December 1, 2018 (edited) Just read 'Last Tango in Aberystwyth', the second of the Malcolm Pryce series (see top of this page). Now I'm about half way through 'Headed for a Hearse' by Jonathan Latimer, a genuine hard-boiled detective story from the 1930s. As with 'The Lady in the Morgue' those of a PC tendency would probably do best to steer clear since there's the usual smattering of words that can't be mentioned any more for black people, Italians and so on, but it's another good entertaining read as far as I'm concerned.
