Its this case. They've been ferried too and from the court most days for a few weeks now.

Aha.

Seen them around Attercliffe Common a few times over the last few weeks or so

I wondered what it was for.

Thanks!

Does anyone know why they do this instead of using video link or holding them in cells in Sheffield? Surely it would save time and money

The court does use a vid link - when they work, or when the prisons actually get the individual into the right place at the right time - a substantial proportion of hearings (not trials) take place with the defendant appearing via tv link -

Whoever it was on the govt side that agreed in the contract to pay the sums involved in transporting people to and from court by the private contractors needs to find another job.

The defendant has a right to attend - if they are unwell for example or infirm - they can appear for trial via the link and that happens not infrequently.

The jury can observe the defendant in the dock over the period of the trial and make an assessment of them that is far more difficult to do when looking at a tv screen.

There are no cells to hold prisoners on remand in a location very close to the court - they are also not in 'police custody' but 'prison custody' both a legal difference and a who is paying for it difference

In this case the whole performance is caused because a person or persons are categorised as Category A prisoners - so there is something of a pantomime every morning and evening.

Thanks for that redfox.

It just seems crazy, costing all that time, money and disruption.

Just to add to my last post, why can't they be transported in an anonymous vehicle?
