The EU and the Irish Border.

Recommended Posts

Any brains on here that can explain the South - Northern Ireland border problem in words I can understand. What has the Border to do with the EU.

Basically when the UK leaves the EU them Northern Ireland (being part of the UK) will be outside the EU whereas the Republic of Ireland will remain part of the EU. Therefore the EU will want border controls to monitor (at least) exports and imports between the EU and the UK.

It's the only land border the UK has with the EU.

Managing the border will be a nightmare, a hard border goes against the Good Friday Agreement.

A soft border will be problematic for obvious reasons. Free movement of EU nationals etc.

Google maps shows the madness of it. The border here goes through the middle of what appears to be a fuel business.

I'm not going to apologise for saying this - it is only one of those things you should have considered before going all-in on Brexit.

In the same way the EU should have thought about the open borders idea and the problems it would bring?

You can blame New Labour for that.

They could have taken action to prevent or impede 500,000 Eastern Europeans turning up on our doorstep . . . but didn’t.

As the Joker indicates, the UK could have stopped people coming here for benefits, it chose not to. You are still assuming the EU has way more power than it actually has.

Easiest solution, make northern Ireland a separate independent country its only a drain on the rest of the u.k anyway.

That would be against the Good Friday Agreement, which declared the status of Northern Ireland would be determined by the wishes of the people of Northern Ireland. The easiest solution is for the Irish Republic to leave the EU.
