Prevent programme

Recommended Posts

A couple who named their baby after Adolf Hitler have been found guilty of being members of a banned terrorist group.

When Naweed Ali, Khobaib Hussain and Mohibur Rahman met up in Belmarsh prison in 2013, they had already broken terror laws.

But it was not until after their beliefs were reinforced, as they mingled with fellow extremists in jail, that they turned their attention to wreaking bloodshed in the UK.

Will jailing people help them to see the error of their ways?

How do we get people to see that they have extreme and harmful views?

We cannot even get the facts across about the EU referendum, so how do we tackle something really difficult like religion?

The Government have the anti-extremism 'Prevent programme' which has come under criticism for being effective.

The 'facts' about the EU debate are a completely different issue to dealing with extreme racism and hatred.

The people have been convicted for being part of a banned organisation. You can't jail people for holding horrible opinions, only for acting on them. Doing so is a very slippery slope, as hopefully most people would see.

dealing with intolerance is a difficult task and The Prevent programme is a last grasp at those who have already gone too far.

Three guilty of neo-Nazi group membership; but even if they are jailed, that will not make them change their views.

How can they be rehabilitated if they are not 'educated' about their beliefs?

That's what I mean, their beliefs led them to join a banned organisation. They need re-education as part of their re-habilitation. My comment specifically said they should be jailed for acting on their horrible beliefs.

The Soviet Union and Communist block was widely mocked and attacked for having «*re-education*» camps. If you believe something, then obviously you believe it. How can you be re-educated out of it ?

Perhaps the current situation requires containment and imprisonment. I thought thePrevent Strategy was only intended for vulnerable individuals, ie. young, mentally ill, learning disabled ?
