They're certainly needed. The A57 was closed again yesterday due to a crash.

Crashes last week closed both Snake and Woodhead.

In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986.
Both are wrong, in part. Although I agree that all six Metropolitan County Councils were abolished, their counties were not.

Both (A57 and A628 ) are closed today, too.

Editing quotes is not fair as it can change the intended meaning.

You quoted me as saying:

Greater Manchester which ceased to exist over 30 years ago?

In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986.

I actually said:
Having made the original mistake of saying that "The airport's not even in Greater Manchester! " are you saying that it is in City of Manchester which is part of Greater Manchester which ceased to exist over 30 years ago?

In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986 with the City of Manchester becoming the unitary authority for the area.[/I]

Remember the gist of this is that your claim that Manchester airport is not in Manchester which apart from part of the new runway is wrong.

No. Manchester Airport is certainly not in the Metropolitan Borough of Manchester.

Where do you think it is?

You also claim in a previous post that "The airport's not even in Greater Manchester!"

Manchester Airport is within the boundary of Woodhouse Park Ward except part of the new runway. All the terminals, original runway, hangars, offices etc. are within the boundary.

Woodhouse Park Ward elects councillors to Manchester City Council. The Lord Mayor of Manchester is a councillor of this ward.

The "...Metropolitan Borough of Manchester." calls itself the City of Manchester and Manchester City Council-one of the nine divisions of the former Greater Manchester City Council which became unitary authorities when the GMCC was abolished.

As to Borough Councils, there are nine metropolitan councils in Greater Manchester seven call themselves borough councils and two call themselves city councils. Manchester City Council (aka City of Manchester) is a borough council in that it was a subdivision of the former Greater Manchester County Council.

Yes, I now agree that Manchester City Council's area includes the airport.
The map at which I looked is a little misleading in its colour referencing; on a closer inspection, I find that you're right.

Not at an airport, no- very expensive there, unless duty free.
But back on topic: doesn't The Snake seem to be closed, for accident and victim recoveries, far more often nowadays than it used to be? And why?
