Socialist Workers Party..

Recommended Posts

Right, so it seems that the past few weeks has seen everyones attention focussed on the BNP and the rights/wrong of the right. I wonder if there is anyone on here who can clear a few things up for me as I've been reading the SWP website and I don't quite understand some of it.

Against racism, imperialism and oppression

We oppose everything which turns workers from one country against those from another. We oppose all immigration controls and campaign for solidarity with workers in other countries. We support the right of black people and other oppressed groups to organise their own defence and we support all genuine national liberation movements. We campaign for real social, political and economic equality for woman and for an end to all forms of discrimination against lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender people.

Can someone please explain this, I genuinely don't get it. Is this aimed at British-born/based minorities, or international ones? Who says Black people are oppressed? None of my black friends feel oppressed and are as confused by that statement as myself :loopy:

Why do you have to pay £10 - £30 per month to be a member of this organization? It seems a lot for the "poor working classes" to be paying, does it not?

Finally, I've gathered that they don't stand for election or have any aspirations to try and go down the elected route. What are the genuine left wing alternatives in our area that DO want to go down the political election route?

Thanks in advance

The SWP has always been a magnet for unwashed malcontents. They love having a pop at anyone who isn't a mao jacket wearing commie - They know that they'd never stand a chance at an election but they're happy to make mischief in the name of the common, working class man.

And the left slink back into the shadows for another 20 years

Do you think the SWP represents "the left"?

The section you highlighted would seem to be referring to both "British-born/based minorities" and "international ones".

The first half "We support the right of black people and other oppressed groups to organise their own defence" referring to "oppressed groups" everywhere including the UK. The 2nd half "we support all genuine national liberation movements" may refer to Republicans in Northern Ireland but I can't see how it could possibly refer to Afro-Caribbeans living here for example. More likely they had groups like the Kurds, Tamils... in mind.

Respect is basically a front for the SWP, and that stands in elections or atleast it did, it may have broken up completely by now though.
