St Thomas/Carson Rd area

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was hoping to get some advice from those familiar with Crookes. My sister is thinking of buying a house around St Thomas Rd, and is just trying to research the street a bit. Is the area generally quiet/low trouble? We know there's a fair few student rentals on St Thomas and some social housing there and on Carson Road (the postwar flats), just trying to gauge whether it's good for a young family and the overall vibe of neighbours etc. Some student commotion is fine and already expected. Moving for Crookes shops, commute and school catchment.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Ideal for a young family and as they get older.

Brought up mine nearby.

It is busy.

It is not quiet.

Plenty of amenities and activities.

Good schools.

Lydgate and Bolehills for playgrounds.

Safe as there are plenty of people around.

Car parking can be a problem.

Student population is declining.

Hello, thank you. That sounds like a pretty safe bet then. She won't mind a bit of noise and bustle (that's the reason she's chosen Crookes anyway, and the closeness to the main road) the worry was more about antisocial behaviour and things like that. Good to know. I've read there's a lot of retirees in those flats on Carson so I assume they're not having raves every night and keying cars.

Thanks very much for the info.

There are four pubs nearby-

Masons Arms has just reopened. Usually a very quiet pub and very local.

The nearby Ball Inn is a very large and busy locals pub. Big food side to it.

Noah's Ark small locals pub- can be loud outside in fine weather.

Grindstone, very quiet. Meals.

None are Student pubs- they are usually seen carrying boxes of beer.

Thoroughly recommend the area.

Approx 30 years ago I lived just off St Thomas Road. At that time there was a really bad neighbour who the police had to get involved with. I was glad to move away. Other than that it was a good location.

Obviously the houses are old with solid walls but thats the same with lots of terraces....
