FoxhillSteve   11 #1 Posted October 19, 2018 Hi, I've just bought a used Ford car and have found out that the Powershift diesel automatic gearbox needs a specialist service and filter change every 3 years or 38k miles.  Apart from the local ford main dealers, can anyone recommend anyone local to have this done and at what cost?  Thanks. I'm sure someone will be along to say i'm wrong.
 Share this content via...
tlangdon12   13 #3 Posted October 25, 2018 Part of the cost is due to the procedure requiring six litres of oil, and a filter. The minimum cost of the oil alone is about £85.  The other part of the cost is because the procedure is reasonable complex. geared   303 #4 Posted October 25, 2018 Gearbox oil changes at under 40 thousand miles?  Seems like a right old con.
 Share this content via...

tlangdon12   13 #6 Posted October 25, 2018 Gearbox oil changes at under 40 thousand miles? Seems like a right old con.  Bear in mind that many cars that do low mileages tend to do a lot of short journeys in city traffic, so it is perhaps not inconceivable that after three years the oil is past its best. geared   303 #7 Posted October 26, 2018 True, but then I've not done gearbox oil on a car every 3 years either. To be fair most cars knocking around with 100k on them are usually still on the same gearbox oil they left the factory with.  Modern Auto's and DSG systems do seem to want more frequent oil changes, oil which isn't exactly cheap either. Top Cats Hat   10 #8 Posted October 26, 2018 A word of caution about automatic gearbox fluid changes.  1. They are very sensitive to small changes to fluid specification and many generic fluids claim to be compliant with various OEM specifications but actually aren't.  2. They are very sensitive to the actual fluid levels. By sensitive I mean that you can trash an automatic gearbox by over/under filling it. The level also has to be assessed at the correct temperature as the level is very different when cold or at operating temperature due to expansion.  3. I'm not familiar with the Ford box but if it has a dipstick you should be able to look at the condition of the existing fluid. If it is clean (usually pink or cherryade colour) then I'd leave it. If it is brownish with little odour I would think about it. If it is dark brown or black and smells 'burnt' you have probably already started to damage your transmission and should definitely replace oil and filter (and probably flush the lines as well)  Yes, the correct transmission fluid is not cheap but neither are replacement transmissions!  What I am saying is find someone who knows what they are doing.
