Sheffield to get devolution

Recommended Posts

According to the article the mayor would control the transport budget and 'strategic planning' whatever that translates to in reality.

Better regional transport coordination and an oyster type of stanard fare structure wpuld be great but don't know how possible that is with dozens of privaye companies involved.

The transport bit has already got underway with the new Sheffield Bus Partnership network and associated ticketing launching this week, which is due to move over to smart cards next month.

Is it? The changes don't exactly appear to be popular so far...

I doubt that this has any relevance to the promised' devolution' changes.

This SYPTE press release refers to it http://www.sypte.co.uk/media.aspx?id=4615

A link is also provided to this document which has a section that refers to the public transport element. I'll let you decide whether what has been delivered so far is exactly what was promised however... http://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/SCR-Devolution-Deal.pdf

Should the 5 areas of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire be included?

They're in because of the 'travel-to-work' catchment area's definition.

Looks like Julie is now not happy with the elected Mayors veto after her preliminary signing of the devolution deal.

But.. Should the 5 areas of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire be included?

God only knows why because because its an absolute certainty that the Mayor will be a "Labour" candidate put forward from the inner circle.

But elected mayors have an awkward knack of not being Labour, despite Labour Councils: Doncaster, Hartlepool, Bristol, etc. Probably partly due to the elections not being 'First Past the Post'.

Most of the Councils have been Labour run for decades.

Julie's preferred model has more to do with consolidating Labour control than democracy. Bolsover (population 70 000) will have the same number of votes in the City Region Authority as Sheffield (population 500 000).
