Andy1976   10 #1 Posted September 12, 2017 Hi,  This is more history than football, but it's football history, so hopefully this is the right place! I suspect the fans of each club will be able to answer this one for me  So, as of recently I've started working near Bramall Lane. As a Wednesday fan, I've never paid that much attention round here, even though I live in S2.  There's a pub, opposite the ground called the Cricketers?  My question is on the history of this pub, as I can't find anything about it.  Is it really old? Does it have anything do with either club starting as a cricket club, as I seem to think that Wednesday in their origins have a cricket club? I think both might, and I seem to think that Bramall Lane had cricket played here?  I just wondered what the link was, if there was one? I know Wednesday used to play round here (Olive Grove and Myrtle Road from what I can find) but wondered if anyone could advise on this? There might be no link at all, and it could be just a name, but wondered if anyone knew?  Cheers!
 Share this content via...
Michael_W   11 #2 Posted September 12, 2017 (edited) Bramall Lane was a cricket ground and was used exclusively as cricket ground until football gained popularity and then it was used as both. the term Sheffield United originally came from an amalgamation of Sheffield cricketers/ cricket clubs who rented wickets at the ground, a cricket club was then formed called Sheffield United. The Wednesday also originated as a cricket club whose members wanted to play football in the non Summer months. The Wednesday played at Bramall Lane before Sheffield United were formed and went on to build their own ground having at some point decided not to pay rent on the Bramall Lane Ground, the forming of the Sheffield United Football club filled the void of ground usage and rent, they now of course own the ground and cricket ceased to be played there in 1973  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bramall_Lane  http://footysphere.com/bramall-lane  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wednesday_Cricket_Club Edited September 12, 2017 by Michael_W
 Share this content via...

I suppose the pub doesn't have to be as old as I thought then - it could be a 50s thing and still have a linked name.  I must be showing my age as I now find this interesting!!!  PS None of this is intended to start any digging or anything else - I was just genuinely interested as I now pass the pub every day. Carlinate   10 #6 Posted September 12, 2017 The Wednesday played at Bramall Lane before Sheffield United were formed[/url]  Yes they did, but it was never their ground. The Wednesday played in a few different stadiums before obtaining their own ground.  Wednesdays original ground which was owned by them was Olive Grove.  https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj_1OyUhKDWAhUlCcAKHQ9oA9IQFggmMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FOlive_Grove&usg=AFQjCNEo1O9Co9n-LAdtRSTh6qqnOQDXjA  On occasions when a larger venue was required they hired the Lane but at no time was it their ground.  They then decided to leave the city of Sheffield and moved to Hillsborough which wasn't a part of Sheffield at that time. Carlinate   10 #10 Posted September 12, 2017 (edited) Your right Carlinate, but I never suggested or said it was Wednesday's ground, I said it was a cricket ground .... which it was !  And still was when I first started going, and for many years after.  ---------- Post added 12-09-2017 at 18:12 ----------  Didn't 'The Wednesday', as they were then called move to Owlerton ?  Both Owlerton and Hillsborough were incorporated into the City of Sheffield in 1901 so any way you look at it The Wednesday left the city.  To be honest I've no idea as to whether or not Hillsborough is Wednesdays original home in the area or if they had a ground in the area prior to another move.  I'd always assumed that as they are side by side either description could be used and that Owlerton lent itself to the nickname.  Someone can no doubt clarify the facts.
