Spring Guided Railway Walks

RAILWAY RAMBLES with the PENISTONE LINE PARTNERSHIP

 

Support use of the local train services on the scenic ‘Penistone Line’ ( Sheffield -Meadowhall -Barnsley - Penistone - Huddersfield).

 

Walks are also held using the Sheffield - Worksop - Retford - Lincoln line and the iconic ‘Brigg Line’ (Sheffield - Gainsborough Central - Kirton In Lindsey - Brigg - Cleethorpes).

 

Walks are held on the first and third Saturdays each month.

 

All are welcome to join in these ‘railway rambles’ – the walks are free but train or bus fares apply.

Wear suitable clothing & footwear – bring along a packed lunch & drink.

 

Trains depart from SHEFFIELD and MEADOWHALL stations at the times stated.

Saturday JANUARY 21st 2017 - A Walk Along The Edgelands - Part 1 !

A walk linking green spaces on the outskirts of Sheffield. An Iron Age hill fort, city parks, ancient woodlands and a disused railway line are all on the itinerary. (meet bottom of stairs in Interchange bus station)

 

Start: 10.05am at MEADOWHALL INTERCHANGE Finish: MEADOWHALL

Distance: 8 miles.

Depart: Sheffield 09.53 to MEADOWHALL

Saturday FEBRUARY 4th 2017 - A Winter Wander !

A moderate walk between Elsecar and Chapeltown stations.

 

Start: 9.25am at ELSECAR station Finish: CHAPELTOWN

Distance: 9 miles.

Leader: Joy Rawlings

Depart: Sheffield 09.06, Meadowhall 09.12 to ELSECAR.

Saturday FEBRUARY 18th 2017 - A Walk Along The Edgelands - Part 2 !

Another walk demonstrating that Sheffield’s green spaces can be linked to make an excellent winter walk full of interest. Ancient woodlands, historical industrial sites, nature reserves and country parks are on the itinerary.

 

Start: 9.50am at DARNALL station. Finish: WATERTHORPE tram stop for return to Sheffield.

Distance: 9 miles.

Leader: John Harker

Depart: Meadowhall 09.33 , Sheffield 09.44 to DARNALL .

Saturday MARCH 4th 2017 - Wars Of The Roses !

A walk that includes historic buildings and waterways, country parks and the site of a medieval battle that had profound implications for the history of England that are still with us.

 

Start: 10.05am at WAKEFIELD KIRKGATE station. Finish: WAKEFIELD KIRKGATE

Distance: 10 miles.

Leader: John Harker

Depart: Sheffield 09.06, Meadowhall 09.12, Barnsley 09.33 to WAKEFIELD KIRKGATE.

Saturday MARCH 18th 2017 - Will You Be Badgered To Do This Trek ?!!

 

A Penistone circular taking in the Trans Pennine Trail, a Bella Vista and Brockholes! Aldermans awaits to the Barnsley Boundary Walk. Delightful Underbank, Sheephouse Wood, Throstle Nest and Salter Hill takes us back to the TPT via New Lodge and Penistone station.

 

Start: 9.45am at PENISTONE station. Finish: PENISTONE

Distance: 10 miles.

Leader: Geoff Ryder

Depart: Sheffield 08.36, Meadowhall 08.42, Barnsley 09.01 to PENISTONE .

Saturday APRIL 1st 2017 - Foolish Behaviour From Trent To Cuckoo !

 

A pleasant walk crossing the mighty River Trent, along footpaths and lanes through villages in North Nottinghamshire to Retford

- no dogs please.

 

Start: 9.45m at GAINSBOROUGH LEA ROAD station. Finish: RETFORD

Distance: 10 miles.

Leader: Stuart Parker

Depart: Sheffield 08.44, Worksop 09.15, Retford 09.25 to GAINSBOROUGH LEA ROAD.

A pleasant circular walk around Barnsley’s fine countryside with several drop out points en-route.

 

Start: 9.15am at BARNSLEY INTERCHANGE. Finish: BARNSLEY

Distance: 9 miles.
