Broad band can work on one wire of the pair ( but normally slower) if the phones are cordless get a standard basic phone and check for dial tone , last resort get a multimeter and check for 50v dc at the incoming master socket

wow bb don't work on one leg of cable needs both a+b and not always 50v depends on attenuation.

best thing to do is call plusnet advise you have tried another handset from test socket still same you require openreach to come fix the issue.

The only reason broadband can keep on working if one wire of the pair is broken is due to induction across the break. The two ends of the cable break behave like a capacitor or transformer, albeit very inefficiently. But obviously the DC voltage on the line cannot easily bridge the gap so the phone ceases to work. But even so a break in one wire of the pair will still degrade broadband performance even if it does manage to struggle through

You do need to make sure that the fault insn't "in house" otherwise you'll get a bill...

Thanks even i can understand that . She phoned p. n. and they are sending openreach out today [ wed] so will let you know what they say . They are wanting £65 if fault is internal . Cheers spider 1

Fault was filter on broadband a fault on extention lead making phone crackle.

The main fault was filter

if he had done from test socket he wont get a bill as it is openreach responsibility from there unless line physically damaged.

hence why I said try phone directly in test socket with no filter

I'm a bit puzzled PlusNet did not recommend this, its basically step 1 in fault finding!

I can only guess the user didn't understand what they were asking.
