Becketts was the name, one of the best in Sheffield

 

The same Becketts that owned both the fish n chip shops on manor top?

they were the old ladys son and grandson at manor top .stan her son had hi chippy on staniforth road then moved to the manor.

Were you a local by the way, if so do you remember the Pecks and the Fletchers?

 

Yes lived next door, left when i was 10! i can remember Penny Fletcher, and also i think one of the guys who worked at the Newsagent was called Fletcher.

The 1968 and 1973 Kelly's directories show "H. Rose, fried fish dealer" at 235 Newhall Road. In the 1942 directory "Alice Simmonite, fried fish dealer" was at the same address, the next entry (No 243) being "James Wilfred McCartin, billiards saloon".

 

That was my grandfather's billiards saloon - it turned into a bookies, run by my father.
