Thanks, a friend needs to go to Manchester in couple of weeks that's a lot cheaper than a standard return.

Are ALL stations on the "Northern Network" actually served by Northern Trains?

To get to some destinations don't you have to use another provider's train?

Does the Day Ranger Ticket allow you to do that?

You can only travel on Northern Trains. Map

If you want to go to Scarborough you could only use the Northern trains that go via Hull.

To get to Whitby you would have to go via Carlisle as there are no Northern Trains between York and Darlington.

Sheffield to Cleethorpes is Saturdays Only and not via Meadowhall

Sheffield to Whitby via Carlisle could be quite an interesting trip, with several possible routes. However, it's likely to require an over night stop if starting after 8.45, so the return cost would be £20.

Maybe someone out there may like to try it? I haven't the time.

I was looking at that as well, looks like a beautiful scenic journey but don't really know unless you do it I guess.
