For potatoes and onions, spread it now and dig in next month when the weeds have stopped germinating.

For sprouts, best to grow them on ground that was manured this year, and lime in spring.

For strawberries, try scattering pelleted chicken manure between the plants in early spring.

Personally I have started on a "no dig" routine for growing.

By putting aged manure on top the worms do the work and weed seeds are smothered, the ones that do survive are hoed off.

By digging seeds can be activated by bringing them to the surface or get distributed through the soil.

If the manure /compost application is not 50mm or above cover the ground this will help deprive germinating weeds of light.
