What a spectacularly naive point of view.

Education, equality, stability, and easy access to health care and cntraception.

Failing that, do what the Chinese did, and legislate.

There's no need for enforcement. The number of children in the world has been steady for over a decade. The reason global population is still going up is down to people living longer - particularly those in poorer countries who now have much better healthcare. Meanwhile the maximum age that people can live to isn't increasing. This means that by the second half of this century global population will stabilise.

See Five ways the world is doing better than you think. You can find the full video from that link here and there's lots more on populationat the Gapminder site.

Yes, I heard that somewhere too. Professor on TV did a whole programme about it.

Carrot and stick approach.

incentives / benefits for couples who stick to one or two children, (not necessarily financial benefits,) and removal of said incentives / benefits if they have more.

A good welfare system would help. In poor countries children don't always survive, so parents have more just in case, as an insurance policy for their old age.

Yes - Hans Rosling - the guy who wrote the article/made the video I linked to.

You don't need a stick and affordable healthcare is pretty much the only carrot you need. But it's already happened. That's why the number of children has stabilised globally.

Seriously, if you haven't watched the Hans Rosling video, do so (and his others). Global population growth is essentially a solved problem - there's just a lag before we reach a steady state.

Altus,
I wish they were right . But this lot disagree that populations are likely to stabilize.

It's up to the rest of us to support Africa/developing nations in aquiring a better standard of living, and a decent welfare system. This isn't altruism, it's in our own best interests to see it happen, for everyone's sake. The alternative is a world that is overpopulated and riven with famine and wars.

For TimmyR,

Quote:
People need new ideas based on reason, not superstition; on freedom, not
personal autonomy; on creativity, not adaptation; on coherence, not
chaos; and on a vision of a free society, based on popular assemblies
and confederalism, not on rulers and a state. If we do not organize a
real movement, a structured movement, that tries to guide people
toward a rational society based on reason and freedom, we face eventual
disaster. We cannot withdraw into our “autonomous” egos or retreat to a
primitive, indeed unknown past. We must change this insane world, or
else society will dissolve into an irrational barbarism, as it is
already beginning to do these days.
The above-by Bookchin-sounds eminently reasonable, but impossible to achieve.
Maybe we are a flawed species headed for a mass extinction.

I wouldn't say that it was inevitable but as a species we need to 'catch ourselves on' as my gran would say, pretty soon before we get to the point of no return.

Anybody see 'Saving Planet Earth. Fixing a hole' (Channel 4, Sat 18th August)?

The story of the first man-made threat to the planet's environment - the hole in the Ozone layer.

Thanks to great science and great leadership, (Mainly Ronald Regan and Margaret Thatcher,) the production and use of CFC gas was halted world wide almost overnight, it wasn't easy, but subsequently, the hole in the Ozone layer repaired.

Very heartening. Just shows what can be done when we work together and are all on the same page.
