Issue with some Intel Processors

Recommended Posts

It's to do with the way that hyper threading works, in it's prediction of what part of 'code' you might need to execute next, so it pre-fetches and processes bits ahead 'just incase' - but in this process, it doesn't go through any sort of security checks on the code to see if it's valid or indeed part of the program it's actually executing, due to the way it bypasses the kernel or something..

this is quite a simplified explanation, but it's quite a major bug, but will only affect a handful of home users, as it's generally only under heavy workloads, and only in certain circumstances (certain instruction execution sets etc)

So not games then, phew,

second hand intel processors will take a hit though.

So not games then, phew,

Too early to say - wait for benchmarks with a patched version of Windows.

The early benchmarks are showing 10 - 30% drop in performance as it the fix is to entirely swap out a block of kernel memory to a different virtual memory space, which is apparently very costly and will take place whenever kernel mode is accessed (which is really quite often).

And its not just Intel Chips, there are two similar though slightly different bugs, one only affects Ibtel, whike the other can also affect ARM and AMD also..

So some phones may also be at risk.

I saw a statement from AMD saying that it didn't affect them, but the national (none tech) news is reporting that it does...

There are actually three vulnerabilities and the one reported yesterday, the one that can cause big slow downs, doesn't affect AMD processors.

The Register has a good summary of the vulnerabilities and what's affected.

3? What's the other?

Theres Meltdown, and Spectre... Meltdown seems to be Intel only, while Spectre is Intel, ARM and AMD...

Spectre covers two of the vulnerabilities.

Its also the hardest to fix.. best I have found so far about this....

It also seems that Spectre is the worst of them..
