Strong red wine -like 15-16% alcohol

More of a "drinkie" question than a "foodie" question I suppose, but can anyone tell me if there is anywhere in Sheff where you can buy red wines which are at the higher end of the "alcoholic content" scale? My brother loves these strong, "meaty" reds and I'd like to get him a bottle or two as a gift when I visit Sheffield soon.

I was watching a Rick Stein telly programme about Croatian cuisine on Beeb2 recently and he was waxing lyrical about wonderful, rich, Croatian red wines that were 16% alcohol....almost like fortified wines. I've never seen Croatian wines on sale in any supermarket...or even in the more trendy - and supposedly more "specialist" - independent booze shops. Can anyone enlighten me here?

Black Stump is 14% and available online. We regularly get The Victorian Shiraz at 15% from Naked Wines

Grapes yield 12.5%_13% max alc. Above this is only reached thru inclusion of stalks and leaves for the sugar in their sap. Sure the booze rises but the flavour drops.

The strongest wine in my cellar at the moment is Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz at 14%. Chilean and Argentinian wines can be pretty robust in flavour if not necessarily in alcohol, look for Carmenere and Malbec, they might not be more than about 13% but they can taste like they are.

I had a bottle of "Moon reserve Cabernet" last night in a French restaurant near Huddersfield. (Yes, I go to Huddersfield for fine food occasionally, there are a few really good restaurants in that area). This is a fine Aussie wine. It was 17% alcohol. Cost £60, but worth every penny.

I buy red wines from various places, but I find Costco has some very good ones, their own label wines (Kirkland) are exceptionally good quality and value for money. If you have access to Costco take a look at their "Signature" wine own label series. You can buy 14% and 15% strength from that range. I buy "Stag's Leap" Cabernet and "Oakville" wines from there. About £18 a bottle.

They also occasionally have "Costasera Amarone". A beautiful rich Italian Amarone wine, 15% - about £22 a bottle that one.

Another option that is really worth trying is the Lebanese wine, "Chateau Musar". Off the top of my head I think that's around 14.5%. It's a beautiful fine wine with a very distinctive taste. Majestic usually sell it for around £20 a bottle. (It's worth asking about other options in Majestic as well - they are usually well-informed and very helpful).

Any of the above should delight someone who enjoys really powerful "big" wines.
