taxman   12 #1 Posted November 19, 2017 Well according to our Chancellor there aren't. What a massive plonker, but the Tories have never given a toss about unemployment, seeing it as a "price worth paying" to get inflation down (Norman Lamont). Jeffrey Shaw   90 #2 Posted November 19, 2017 But he has clarified what he meant. In context, he was referring to shorthand typists; he pointed out that there no unemployed shorthand typists nowadays, on the grounds that there are (presumably) no shorthand typists. Jeffrey Shaw   90 #6 Posted November 19, 2017 Exactly. Why is this even a news story. Because his phraseology was at least unkind to those people who are unemployed. (Although it seems not to be they, but the Labour Party/LDP/Trades Unions, who are kicking-up a fuss).
 Share this content via...
Robin-H   11 #7 Posted November 19, 2017 Theres absolutely nothing in this story  I completely agree. The fact that people are trying to jump on this makes me really worry for people's comprehension skills.  It was perfectly clear what Hammond was referring to in his interview, he was referring to the fact that there aren't any unemployment shorthand typists sitting around grumbling about the invention of the computer.  It was clumsy phrasing, but anybody with any ounce of sense would know that Hammond is aware that there are unemployed people in this country, and this really is a non story. banjodeano   31 #8 Posted November 19, 2017 This man completely sums up the Tory party, they know nothing outside of their westminster bubble  ---------- Post added 19-11-2017 at 20:42 ----------  But he has clarified what he meant. In context, he was referring to shorthand typists; he pointed out that there no unemployed shorthand typists nowadays, on the grounds that there are (presumably) no shorthand typists. well, he didnt actually... because before he made that silly comment, he stated that this government had to make sure that the people had the skills, capabilities, and the tools they need to evolve, to learne new careers, and then he stated "where are the unemployed"? implying that there isnt any, because everyone has the new skills in which he mentioned prior....
