25yrs Ago Today – The Big One!!

Recommended Posts

On this day 25yrs ago the biggest Sheffield derby of all time was played at Wembley (after fans protested the original choice of Elland Road) thousands of fans of both persuasion made there way to London en masse. Two contrasting styles of football going head to head. The game couldn’t have got off to a better start for SWFC with the superb Waddle firing in one of THE all time great FA cup goals with a long range free kick. From then on the class of the Owls showed with a dominant performance although a bearded Alan Cork did get united back on level terms in the first half. It was virtually all Wednesday with Alan Kelly producing a goalkeeping performance of a lifetime to take the game to extra time. A series of Owls corners in added time led to a header from Bright to win the game 2-1.

A momentous day with the celebrations going on into the night.

We’ll probably never see its like again.

How quickly time flies...can't believe its 25 years to the day since the Wednesday v United FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley...

We all know the result...but the build up to the game was something else..and probably something never to be repeated as rival supporters shared coaches down to the game...face painters and balloon sellers made a fortune and it was probably something Wembley had never seen as the teams came out on to the pitch....

Even Unitedites would admit the game was somewhat one-sided but as an event it was probably a once in a life time experience....

I remember going with my dad on the coach from the Cross Keys (I think) in Wath, was 6 years old at the time and remember very little. Although I do remember a huge Blades flag going over us just as the teams walked out and Cork's goal. I have zero recollection of extra time but why would I want to remember that? :hihi:

Is that the year Wednesday won it? Against Man Utd I believe?

Before my time, but my Mum won tickets to the final and gave them to my Dad, Uncle, and Grandad. My Dad an Owl, his brother a Blade, and their Dad quite impartial, but I think he'd call himself an Owl.

All cheering on Wednesday together.
