The only answer to the problem is one that will never overcome the apparent NRA veto.

The weakness of a written Constitution!

The Second Amendment reads

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

[see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution]

Clearly, it relates to a time when each State of the USA was a separate legal entity and had its own militia (= local Army).

A modernised version suited to the 21st century might better read thus:

Individuals shall not bear arms PROVIDED THAT nothing in this Amendment shall:

(a) imperil the security of the USA or

(b) fetter its Administration in the provision of Federal Armed Forces.

It isn't. Many Americans like having a gun and they obviously think that this is a consequence that they will bear.

Judging on what's going on in London, with shootings, post code gangs, stabbings, acid throwings and moped bandits, we're not in the best position to lecture other countries on lawlessness.

theres a massive difference tho (apart from the actual number of shootings), ours is criminal, in the US theirs is in 99% of cases legally held firearms, lets guess which one could be easily curtailed if they really want to (its normally people with legally held firearms, or access to legally held firearms that just "crack" NOT criminals)
