Marie Colvin, Sunday Times Journalist, killed in Syria

Recommended Posts

I watched a report from her yesterday and thought what a brave woman she was, and how dangerous the situation was for journalists.

Thank you for your bravery and dedication to your work, RIP.

Marie Colvin, who was killed in Syria on Wednesday morning, gave the main address at St Bride's church in 2010 at a service to commemorate journalists, cameramen and support staff who had lost their lives during conflicts.

The address was made in front of a congregation including editors from across the news industry and Camilla Duchess of Cornwall.

Her words, which we run in full below, explain the motivation of the war correspondent and the importance of the job they do.

"Your Royal Highness, ladies and gentlemen, I am honoured and humbled to be speaking to you at this service tonight to remember the journalists and their support staff who gave their lives to report from the war zones of the 21st Century. I have been a war correspondent for most of my professional life. It has always been a hard calling. But the need for front line, objective reporting has never been more compelling.

Covering a war means going to places torn by chaos, destruction, and death, and trying to bear witness. It means trying to find the truth in a sandstorm of propaganda when armies, tribes or terrorists clash. And yes, it means taking risks, not just for yourself but often for the people who work closely with you.

Brave woman.

Had she been accidentally killed by Israelis during the Gaza/Lebanon conflicts, this thread would be 10 pages by now.

It really is amazing how the left wing don't even pretend to care about Syria or Libya for that matter.

The 'stop the war' coalition were out in the streets in their tens of thousands to denounce Israel. 9 Turkish Islamic extremists who attacked Israeli soldiers on board the flotilla and were killed, caused more of an 'outrage' in the world - with left wing media hyping it on rolling news and people lining up to denounce Israel.

Where are the left wing over the deaths in Syria? where are all those Muslims who during the Gaza/Lebanon conflict claimed to 'bleed' for their Muslim brothers?

What a hypocritical, morally bankrupt lot. The next time we see these cowards crawl out of the woodwork and from under their rocks to denounce Israel when Israel is defending themselves, we'll know their motivation is a racist one rather than a 'humanitarian' one.

Condemning them heartily. Moscow and Beijing have twice blocked UN resolutions condemning the ongoing repression in Syria that has left thousands of people dead, moan about them.

Assad's spies would have known full well that the building where Marie was murdered was the only place international reporters took some kind of cover from the slaughter he was sending into Homs.

He may now have made the biggest miscalculation of his life because as we all know, Rupert Murdoch who had been Marie's employer at the Sun. Times for many years is very loyal to long term staff and Marie being an American would also have hit home in the US as well.

Murdoch controls the biggest media group in the world and it is certain that his empire will bring endless attention all over the world to what Assad is doing, thereby forcing eventual military action with only one outcome for Assad. The sooner the better for everyone but Assad.

Do you have to left-wing to have compassion, and care for your fellow human beings, wherever they are in the world?

Play with fire your going to get burned sooner or later springs to mind.

Damn good reporter but notoriety does not come without it's inherent risk's in war zones.

R.I.P.

Israeli terrorism needs to be exposed for the murderous act it is.

What about our Government ? - they were quick to 'get involved' in Libya; why not Syria ?

Wholeheartedly condemning the craven actions of Russia and China in preventing any meaningful UN action.

1) There is no such thing as "the left wing"

2) Where are you over the deaths in Syria?

3) What would you suggest "the left" do? Form brigades to go over and fight?

Yes, I agree, brave woman. If ever there was reassurance that coming out of the military at this redundancy tranche was the right idea, this is it. I'm leaving the RAF after 18 years of banging my head against a brick wall in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet another 'poohole' (for want of a better word) of a country that will spiral into civil war. We will no doubt get involved somehow, somewhere down the line. So as Afghan troops reduce in the next few years we move to Syria, then Iran? then where? Banging our military heads against a brick wall and losing precious Brit lives no doubt.

Well a simple-minded fool would think the answer is oil.

The real answer is, we would risk igniting the whole region. No nation gave enough of a damn about Libya to get involved against Nato.
