Speeding discretions to go?

Recommended Posts

The margin for error has never been a set rule anyway, it's applied differently by different forces.

Still I don't see why the police need to be so draconian in applying the law, there was nothing wrong with the small margin for error that already existed.

Have just read this article in the Mirror, could it be more dangerous and lead to more accidents with drivers concentrating on their speed?

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/police-crack-down-speeders-who-6166737

Could you explain how drivers driving more carefully could lead to more accidents?

Driver see's camera

Driver panics

Driver stares intently at speedo while slamming on brakes.

Car squirrels all over the road as driver isn't looking out the windscreen

Car hit pedestrian/road furniture/oncoming traffic

Or driver drives to the standards required for their driving test and manages to maintain their speed to the limit of the road?

It really isn't hard to maintain your speed and not have to stare at the speedo. That's why 17 year old kids can pass their tests. Laziness and lapsing of driving skills and a lackadaisical attitude to driving are no excuse.

Money is the answer?

and if that was in any way true we probably wouldn't even need car insurance.

There is another option - the driver drives more carefully.

That record is tired and worn out mate, you know full well the public at large can't manage that.

I'd bet at least 1 in 2 people with a full diving licence would fail a driving test if they had to sit one tomorrow.

People are stupid, they do act irrationally and general driving standards are well below what is required to pass a test.

So long as vehicle speedos under-read, no issue with stronger enforcement.

As alchresearch correctly pointed out, it's not hard to stay at (or oscillate slightly below) a speed limit. Moreover, most modern auto and manual cars come fitted with a cruise control-limiter function these days.

In my experience, such initiatives have worked wherever I've seen them tried.

Does anybody who actually drives regularly think that they can guarantee never to edge over the speed limit without either A: spending a lot of time looking at the speedo and therefore paying less attention to the road, or B: driving routinely 10mph under the speed limit ?
