Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all well.

Has anyone been upgraded to fibre optic broadband around S2 area. I need a faster internet connection but cant find proper information when or where its being upgraded. Has anyone been upgraded to fibre yet?

Many thanks.

I work for Plusnet, You can look up what status your area is in on https://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/

and/or speeds of what your area will reach here: https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

Those are the most updated sites as we use them to back up our systems incase we ever have problems finding if an exchange/cabinet is fibre enabled.

Hope this helps :-)

If you're connected to the Sheffield Exchange, as I am, then at present you have no hope of getting a FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) connection as the Sheffield exchange is yet to be upgraded.

Work is ongoing with this however, so please register your interest here; http://www.superfastsouthyorkshire.co.uk/

You may be lucky and live in a Virgin Media area, so you might be able to get something from them. I would suggest looking at SamKnows to find out whats available to you; https://www.samknows.com/broadband/

Thanks for your help. I have checked online on these websites. It only says UR - Under review. So I am guessing it will take a few more years to get fibre connectivity :-(

I used to be with Plusnet and the broadband speed was 2.5 and was told that it was the fastest I could get at my location. Changed to EE and I now get 4.2, with a 12 month contract and much cheaper line rental.

Why does changing providers also alter speed?

It's a very hard to explain situation really..in all honesty over the previous years internet capabilities have changed alot. Theres been Dial up, ADSL, ADSL+ and ADSL2, and now Fibre..chances are when you signed up with us you was put on an ADSL package which was standard at the time and allowed a max of 2.5, at the time ADSL improved very quickly and unless we litterally signed you up after the changes, you would have been stuck on 2.5, hence why when you moved, you'd have been put on the new ADSL2 packages, within the space of 9 months, it went from ADSL to ADSL+ and then ADSL2 so big changes in 9 months. Like if you come back to Plusnet now..

You're guarenteed the same speeds as you are currently on, if not quicker haha

I have plusnet fibre at home , been with you lot for well over 10 years now , formerly Metronet which I think you bought out, anyway I digress.

Any inside knowledge on when either city centre or attercliffe exchanges are going to get fibred up now BT has finally been allowed to step in and sort out the mess left by Digital Region?

Been desperate for faster internet at work for years - couldnt get it through DR , and now openreach just says something like "under review"...

We've had a lot of speculation about that area and at the moment BT aren't telling us anything since they're currently in talks with EE and O2 to buy them out..So at the minute i think once that has come to a final decision, they will begin to mass produce their products to more people as im hearing they're gonna be going crazy getting people hooked to Fibre quick in the coming few months.

Best bet at the minute is to keep an eye on this website: http://www.superfastsouthyorkshire.co.uk/ as eventually this will give timelines and a postcode checker.

Until then, keep on guessing like the rest of us !

It could also be down to the equipment in the exchange, it is likely that your move to EE took you off the BT Wholesale network on onto EEs LLU network.

THis means you're not connected to any outdated equipment and have the newer equipment that EE were allowed to install when the exchange was deregulated.

Its all very complicated and messy when you get into the exchange side of equipment etc.

(ANd in EX Plusnet. ;) )
